On November 11, 2010, Veterans Day, the Missouri State University community will witness a first for our campus. The MSU Alliance for Veterans and Veterans Day planning committee will commemorate the World War I moment of cease-fire right before 11 am with the playing of ‘Taps.’
The unique feature of this performance will be that it will be performed by 79 trumpeters/buglers stationed all around campus playing ‘Taps’ in a cascading/round fashion. Trumpeters/Buglers will be spaced at regular 50-75 yard intervals. One player begins ‘Taps’; after the first three notes are sounded, the next player starts the first note as the previous player starts their fourth note, and so on in a cascade.
Each player sounds ‘Taps’ to completion. 79 trumpeters have confirmed and are committed to perform at this event, including trumpeters from Evangel University, Drury University, 3 community bands and 56 trumpeters from the MSU Pride Marching Band. At 10:53 am, the Cascade ‘Taps’ Performance will begin with Dr. John Prescott playing at the McDonald Arena flag pole. Seven minutes later, after the cascade has made its way around campus, Professor Michael Casey will complete the sequence on the steps of Carrington Hall at 11 am, then the Jane A. Meyer Carillon will sound the eleventh bell, and University Carillonist, Dr. Jeremy Chesman, will perform a series of patriotic songs, including Eternal Father, America the Beautiful, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and a medley arrangement of the five service branch songs.
