Senior: Sociology & Anthropology Department.
While exploring different aspects of social justice issues, Haley found a passion for food. “There is a continuum from simple to complex that food plays in all our lives and is a driving force behind establishing community networks,” says Haley.
Since 2015, Haley has been involved with Springfield Community Gardens in a variety of ways: weeding, seeding, sifting compost, harvesting vegetables and organizing and weighing produce in preparation for transport to local markets. “This experience has given me a wider perspective on community collaboration that I couldn’t have obtained in the classroom. It has opened new doorways for me to pursue my passion of active citizenship and for achieving my personal goals.”
Haley encourages everyone to get involved because the relationships that are established, combined with the learning experience, can broaden one’s horizons. She lives by the motto: “Onwards and Upwards” and believes that when she finds herself outside her comfort zone, it is probably worth exploring.
For her commitment to the public affairs mission, we are proud to recognize Haley Korn as December’s Student Spotlight.
