Associate Professor, Psychology Department.
Adena’s passion for inclusiveness and issues surrounding diversity opens new opportunities for others to understand multiple perspectives, confront stereotypes and implement meaningful change. In 2012 she developed a workshop for junior high school students entitled, “Diversity Pep-Talk: Finding Strengths in Differences.” This program helps young adults celebrate their differences rather than foster prejudice and discrimination. “I love working with kids,” says Adena. “Starting at a young, impressionable age can drastically reduce prejudice and discrimination. It is refreshing to hear profound depth from such young students.” While increasing the program through local schools, she is also extending her work to area teachers. “It is imperative for teachers to be culturally conscious, aware of differences and better equipped to handle those differences in the classroom.”
Using the public affairs pillars as guideposts in her teaching, advising, research and service, Adena is helping to create better, safer and more tolerant environments and communities.
For these efforts and many more, Public Affairs is pleased to recognize Dr. Adena Young-Jones as December’s Faculty Public Affairs Spotlight!
