Luke Ellickson
Senior, Biology Department
A desire for wanting to help others has led to a future in dentistry for Luke Ellickson, a biology major who has applied for the reserved admissions program at the University Of Missouri Kansas City School Of Dentistry.
For nearly 2 years now, Luke has been volunteering his time to the Tooth Truck, The Healthy Smiles Academy and the Boys and Girls Club Sertoma Unit. Ellickson says “Having the opportunity to see the dramatic improvement in a child’s self-image after an important dental procedure is incredible” and “I find it extremely rewarding to see the change in a patient’s attitude and confidence following a dental procedure.”
The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, better known as the Tooth Truck, provides x-rays, cleanings and dental procedures to qualifying children in the area. Specifically, Luke is responsible for helping the kids feel relaxed and comfortable will transporting kids from the classroom to the dental visit. He also performs office related tasks and helps out with cleaning and other needed duties.
The Took Truck sister program, The Healthy Smiles Academy provides similar services but focuses on education and oral hygiene supplies. The Academy travels to Springfield Public Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, and other organizations.
After dental school, Luke plans to open his own dental practice. He says his goal is “to provide the highest quality care for the community by catering to each patient’s individual needs”. We are so pleased to spotlight Luke in September for his dedication to our community and the public affairs mission. Thank you and good luck with dental school!
