We woke up this morning for an early morning flight for Hue. When we got off the plane, we were faced with heat even hotter than Saigon. The temperature was about 99 farenheight, but with humidity, it had a feel of about 113. We were sure to pack plenty of water for our full day.
First, we went to the Imperial City where the emperors of Vietnam lived. The grounds were huge, complete with many courtyards, statues, and even a place called “The Forbidden Purple City” that was reserved for solely for the emperor and his family. I really, really enjoyed learning the history of the Imperial City and seeing the relics and pictures that accompanied the stories. Some of the most memorable, interesting things I learned:
1. Some emperors took throne at young ages, like 7. Such a young age. It was probably difficult adjusting to adulthood so quickly.
2. An emperor had one wife and any other woman after that was a concubine. One emperor had about 398 concubines and 130 kids. I had no idea that the numbers were that high. Apparently, a lot of women wanted the famous name of the emperor. Though, if she became a concubine, she was not allowed to leave the palace until the emperor died. She had to stay in the concubine wing of the city.
3. Elephants were trained for battle by facing tigers.
4. A few emperors were captured and sent to Africa by the French in order to separate the emperor from his people.
Later, we went to the Thien Mu Pagoda. This seven tier pagoda was so tall! Years ago, this pagoda served as the location for many Buddhist protests against discrimination. In particular, it was noted that the monk that set himself on fire to protest, in a well-known photo, was from Hue.
Finally, the last main activitiy for the day was a boat cruise on the perfume river. On the ride, we listened to traditional Vietnamese instruments and singers in their traditional dress. It was a relaxing evening.
Despite it being soooo hot, I had a wonderful day!!! I really enjoy historical artifacts and interesting stories to accompany them. This might be my favorite day so far.
