The day started again early in the morning with breakfast from Saigon Eden Star Hotel. I was able to try dragonfruit, a local favorite, and of course, coffee. We then met with our tour guide, William, who organized our tour of Mekong Delta. This region of southern Vietnam is known for its rich culture and floating markets. A floating market is a boat docked out on the water which sells goods, like local fruits. People dock up next to the boat, enter the market, and buy their goods. Amazingly, these boats also serve the people as homes. Many locals live on their boat and run their business there as well. We drank fresh coconuts and tried dried coconut at our first stop. Along the river are numerous different villages. We stopped at several of them. Along the stops, we were able to engage with their culture by seeing how different foods were prepared. Most notably, we tried Happy Water (distilled alcohol), Snake Wine, durian fruit, among many other things. We then boarded small paddle boats where we toured a Mekong River tributary. For lunch, we stopped at a home-restaurant. They served us pork wrapped in seaweed, fried spring rolls, vegetable soup, and fried elephant fish. We then got back on the boat and had about an hour ride back to our bus to travel back to Ho Chi Minh City. We arrived back at the hotel. I traveled around the city with Hien to find her phone and interacted with locals. I then returned to the hotel to rest up for the next day. It was a great day, filled with cultural experiences.
