Since the cyclone literally rained on our parade/plans – day two of Fiji was a little more relaxed but helped our group bond in my opinion. We all walked around to evaluate the damage this day after breakfast and later walked together to grab lunch and dinner at a local establishment called Grace Kitchen. This ended up being the same owner of Awesome Grill from the day before. This reminded me about conversations I’ve had with people about growing and eating food locally versus having it mass produced and shipped – in other words, sustainable agriculture. While we were walked back Lauren and I noticed the tons of water bottles in one of the storm trenches/waterways off the side of the road. Since Fiji is an under-developed country water can really only be trusted to drink when it comes from a bottle BUT these same bottles end up on the side of the road. This makes me question what we can do about sustainability improvement in third world countries and how we take for granted all the efforts we have in the States to live more sustainably.
