One thing I connected with this week was learning more about the opium war. I visited Hong Kong Stock Exchange and they have a whole museum about how China’s economy became what it is today. One thing I noticed. China does not like to talk and mention that they sold Opium. And they especially don’t like admitting how much they sold as well. The opium war was China’s biggest export. They used to trade with the British. After the British made a treaty to return Hong Kong, China shortly began stopping their export of Opium. While at the museum, I read on a timeline that mentioned their history of selling opium but it was very brief. This chapter hasn’t been my favorite, but it was interesting to catch up on Geography and some old history.
