2021 Dance Concert- “Benevolence!”

December 2, 2021 by Matthew Walter

"Fall Dance Concert 2021"

Closing out our jam-packed semester of amazing performances, we have the Department of Theatre and Dance’s fall dance concert- Benevolence!

This is a concert dance performance with pieces choreographed by the students in the DAN 520 Choreography and Production class. Each thought up original concepts, cast their pieces, and worked all semester to present their incredible, fully-discovered works.

See below to read all about each choreographer and their piece!

"Guerre Della Creozionne"
Guerre Della Creozionne

Choreographer: Anthony Saviello

  • Dancers: Kelsey Zimmerman, Logan Starkey, Camryn Denny, Joseph Bartkowiak, Sarah Little, Courtney Adamson
  • Title: Guerre Della Creozionne
    • This dance is a creation piece about how one person’s creativity and passion threatens a system in which everything must follow the same process. It is more than a fight between good and evil but rather a disagreement about how the world is to be conducted.

Choreographer: Elyssa Hallgreen

  • Dancers: Sadie Nehlson, Britni Fletcher, Claire Marshall, Josephine Solvie
  • Title: Forest Fire
    • This piece is about needing a forest fire so that you can start anew. In a sense, a forest fire is like a new beginning as the fire allows for restoration of the woods.

Choreographer: Birianna Baland

  • Dancers: Gabrielle Lunn, Joseph Bartkowiak
  • Title: I’m holding on… (but am I really?)
    • Everybody goes through rough patches, and it can be scary to reach out. Sometimes the support or person we need can be right in front of us, or come out of nowhere.

"Mind, Body, and Spirit"
Mind, Body, and Spirit

Choreographer: Brooke Williamson

  • Dancers: Alexis Smith, Parker Link, Josephine Solvie, Lisa Sandoli, Mollie-Claire Mathews
  • Title: Mind, Body, and Spirit
    • This dance follows choreographer Brooke Williamson’s journey through her mind, body, and spirit to find her identity in Christ. From being isolated, to finding true relationships and friendships, and finally having peace, this journey is one that had to be shared.

Choreographer: Hattie Geltemeyer

  • Dancers: Alexandra Olsen, Elisa Peters, Elyssa Hallgreen, Kelsey Zimmerman, Britni Fletcher, Gabrielle Lunn
  • Title: Resurgence From Lament
    • This piece is about the different stages of grief and how people in different situations go through it. No one person goes through the same process of grieving, and this dance explores how individuals in these different situations process their grief.

Choreographer: Dorian DeHart

  • Dancers: Logan Starkey, Matt Walter, Shayna Rives, Anna Pennington, Ayu Lockos, Max Twogood
  • Title: SCRAMBLE!
    • This dance encompasses a single day in the life of New York City. Get ready to experience the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Emovere
Emovere

Choreographer: Ryan Nolan

  • Dancers: Claire Marshall, Camryn Denny, Lisa Sandoli, Alexis Smith (understudy)
  • Title: Emovere
    • The word “emotion” comes from the latin word “emovere,” which means to move, move out, or move through. This piece explores the use of emotion as a method of naturally putting energy into dance, both improvised and choreographed movement.

Choreographer: Matt Walter

  • Dancers: Emily Harper, Ella Hymes, Matt Walter
  • Title: sup/port
    • When creating “sup/port,” Matt was intrigued by the idea of emotional support, what it means to people, and how it can be expressed. He wanted to see the contrast of having and not having the support we all need.

"Myself Through You"
Myself Through You

Choreographer: Britni Fletcher

  • Dancers: Elyssa Hallgreen, Alexandra Olsen, Camryn Denny, Hattie Geltemeyer, Abby Ball
  • Title: Myself Through You
    • This piece is about seeing women’s stories through the lens of other women. While we go on separate journeys, we face similar battles everyday.

27 dancers. 9 choreographers. 4 nights only.

Benevolence will premiere Friday, December 3rd and will run through Sunday, December 5th with 7:30pm performances each day and a 2:30pm Sunday matinee. All performances will take place in Craig Hall’s Balcony Theatre and are free to attend. Reservations are not needed, but masks will be mandatory.
