Missouri State University student Matthew Evans, a senior hospitality and restaurant administration (HRA) major, won the 2011 Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship, one of the top scholarships offered by the hospitality industry. As the first place winner, Evans will receive $5,000 and a commemorative plaque. The scholarship honors Arthur J. Packard, a third-generation hotelier, whose work for the American Hotel and Lodging Association extended over 30 years. Beginning in 1974, the Packard competition provides scholarships to the most outstanding student of lodging management and to two runners-up through an annual national competition among four-year hospitality programs.
“Matt’s leadership, involvement, diverse experiences and integrity are exceptional,” said Dr. Melissa Dallas, head of the HRA department. “He is a true asset to our department and to the university.”
The scholarships are awarded through the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation (AHLEF), the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Recipients were selected based on a combination of hospitality work experience, academic performance, activities and financial need.
“This year’s competition was a tough one as many qualified students were nominated,” said Joori Jeon, CPA, CAE and AHLEF president/COO. “In particular, Matt Evans displayed exemplary work and academic experience, including several industry internships, two study-abroad programs—one in France and another in China, outstanding academic performance, and leadership positions in student government and professional organizations.”
