We began pruning Catawba grapes this week. They are one of our hardier grape varieties, so we prune them earlier in the dormant season than the more cold tender varieties. We are leaving 40 to 45 buds on the larger vines and 30 to 35 buds on the smaller vines. If a vine has less than a pound of pruning weight, it is tagged with blue ribbon so we know to remove the fruit from it next year.
