9/10/09 Springfield, MO — Writer/performer Michael Fosberg began a personal search for his biological father at age 34 that turns up a whole lot more. Armed with only the name of his father and the knowledge that he lived in the Detroit area two decades earlier, Fosberg makes a miraculous call which sets in motion a series of discoveries about his family — of secrets and lies, confrontation and reconciliation. Incognito balances humor and emotion as it deals with race, prejudice and life’s difficult choices.
Through a grant from the Missouri State University Public Affairs Office, Incognito will be presented on Thursday October 8th at 7:30pm in Carrington Auditorium. This performance is FREE and open to the public.
In a hybrid between the late-great satirical monologist Spalding Gray and the vivid storytelling of Charlayne Woodard, Incognito is the resulting one-man play about Fosberg’s emotion-packed personal journey for self discovery.
Hailed by Chicago critics as “one of the top theatrical events of the 2001 season” Incognito was discovered by Peter Altman, then producing artistic director of the Missouri Repertory Theatre (now Kansas City Rep). The show opened the 2002 season at the Rep and was subsequently hailed by the Kansas City Star as “among the most unique examples of a one-man show that theatregoers are likely to encounter.” Robert Trussell, lead critic of the Star said of the show, “This play has a lot of heart. It’s a small show full of big ideas.” The show has subsequently toured to theaters, performing arts centers, high schools and colleges across the country.
Michael Fosberg, a Chicago native, has been writing, acting, and directing for more than twenty-five years. He has performed in Chicago as an actor at the Steppenwolf & Goodman Theatres, having worked with directors Gary Sinise, John Malkovich, and Robert Falls. He received a Jeff Citation for Best Actor for his performance in Sam Shepard’s Savage/Love. His memoir, Incognito, on which the play is based, will be published next fall by Chicago Review Press. The film company NUMBER 8 is currently making a documentary about his life and play.
