Alex Gaebler, a senior graphic design major from Poplar Bluff, is no stranger to seeing her designs on apparel in stores. And yet, the possibility of seeing her Be a Bear design in the MSU bookstore brings a whole new level of excitement.
Gaebler has worked for an apparel design company in her hometown called Southeast Signs and Graphics since she was 15-years-old. When her professor decided to have everyone in the class enter a design in the 2022 design contest, she knew exactly what to do.
“I wanted my design to encompass all the positive emotions I feel when I think about what it means to be a Bear,” Gaebler said.
Pulling from her knowledge of what is trendy in apparel design, she used a vintage celebration design that highlights the community she feels at Missouri State.
On the MSU Community
To Gaebler, the community she feels at Brick City, and on the main campus, is one where diversity is not only welcomed but celebrated. “Coming from a small town, being in such welcoming and open community has allowed me to grow as a designer as well as a person,” she said.
After graduating next December, Alex hopes to find a career in graphic design.
About the 2022 Be a Bear T-Shirt Contest
The 2022 Be a Bear T-shirt contest runs from February 14 – 20. Students, Alumni, and friends of MSU are encouraged to vote on their favorite design in hope of seeing it come to life in the bookstore.
The winning shirt will be released for sale in the MSU Bookstore on March 18, MSU’s birthday, and sold through Homecoming weekend this fall.
Proceeds support the SAA Degree Completion Fund, which offers scholarships to students in need of extra help, allowing them to complete their degree while here at Missouri State.
To Alex, “Being a Bear means that you are part of something bigger than yourself.” And when you think about it, that is exactly what participating in this contest is.
