Summer time is the perfect time to catch up on your reading. To make it even better, you could start a family book club. What a great way to have some conversations with your student!
You are invited to join me in reading Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. Enrique’s Journey “recounts the unforgettable quest of a Honduran boy looking for his mother, eleven years after she is forced to leave her starving family to find work in the United States. Braving unimaginable peril, often clinging to the sides and tops of freight trains, Enrique travels through hostile worlds full of thugs, bandits, and corrupt cops. But he pushes forward, relying on his wit, courage, hope, and the kindness of strangers.” (http://www.enriquesjourney.com/)
Enrique’s Journey is the 2016 Common Reader for all incoming Missouri State students. The purpose of the common reader is to provide a common academic experience and create a greater sense of community among students, faculty and staff, and to provide an introduction to intellectual life at Missouri State University. Your student will discuss the book in class and study groups, learning more about the public affairs mission along the way. Reading this book with your student is a great way to bond, understand more about your students course work and enjoy a very inspiring book.
Encourage your student to start reading the book over the summer to get a head start on their required reading for Fall 2016.
Let me know if you have any questions about the Common Reader. You can contact me at pchildress@missouristate.edu or (417) 836-3060.
Happy Reading!
