Good evening. My name is Andrea Weber, and I am the Dean of Students. First, I want to take this opportunity to welcome any faculty members who have joined us for dinner tonight. If you are a faculty member, please stand. I want you to look around the room and know what a special place MSU is to have faculty here after hours who want to get to know you.
Our faculty members help shape your in-class room experience and are top notch when it comes to assisting students. My hope is that as you have dine with us tonight that you have take this opportunity to get to know them. If you haven’t, when you return back in August, please take the time to get to know the faculty who are instructing you.
As important as it is to spend time working on your classes, it is also important to get involved. We have over 300 student organizations including Student Government Association, Residence Hall Association, Student Activities Council, Association of Black Collegians, and a variety of religious organizations. In addition to getting involved in student organizations, take this opportunity to attend campus and community events. I’m sure you have heard about our athletic teams.
Sorry family members! Students– don’t go home on the weekend, go to events!
Making your Missouri STATEment can happen in a number of different ways and it is up to you on how you make it. Take every opportunity available to you and don’t leave any on the table. When you are in your residence hall room, leave the door open to meet new people. But make sure to lock it when you leave.
Participate in community services events offered by the Center for Community Engagement. Go on a service trip over Spring Break. Travel aboard through the Office of Education Abroad. Join a fraternity or sorority by participating in recruitment or intake.
First and foremost attend all the Welcome Week events – you will not want to miss Bear Bash. Make sure to attend an event hosted by Traditions Council like Fountain Day.
We know there are lots of places you can attend college. However, we also know how amazing Missouri State is and you won’t be disappointed. We are very excited you have decided to make MSU your home over the course of the next few years and cannot wait for you to return in the fall.
We like to think that MSU is very special and an exciting place to be. Each one of us at MSU cares about your success and want you to make your Missouri statement.
