Take a moment to get to know Mia Simone Parker, 2023-2024 Orientation Assistant.
Tell us about yourself. Hi! My name is Mia Simone Parker, and I’m originally from Bryant, Arkansas. I’m a current sophomore double majoring in B.A. Theatre and B.A. Screenwriting.
What have you been involved with on campus? On campus I have been involved with SOAR, Ursa, University Ambassadors, Bears LEAD, Tabula Rasa, and I’m currently on the production side of two shows in the MSU theatre department!
You were a SOAR Leader this past summer. What made you apply to be a SOAR Leader? I applied to be a SOAR Leader because of the positive impact I had as a student going through SOAR. I was very excited to go to college, but also extremely nervous because I was moving out of state and didn’t know anyone else who was going here. During my SOAR session, all my fears were alleviated. I met the people who are still my closest friends right now, and felt so confident going into my freshman year. I knew I wanted to carry on that legacy and help other incoming students have a positive start to their journey.
What did you learn from being a SOAR Leader? What are the qualities of a good Leader? I learned a lot of things from being a SOAR Leader. This position is truly a great way to work on time management and team skills. As well, you learn how to be a leader while also making sure people know they can trust and rely on you. The qualities of a good leader are a positive attitude, a quick responder, and having a concept of organization in both your work and personal life.
Why do you think that other students should apply to be a SOAR Leader? I think that other students should apply to be a SOAR Leader because of the great experiences you get. During the summer you get to work with a team of over 40 people who all come from different backgrounds and majors. As well, you work closely with MSU faculty and get to create great connections with them as well.
Why did you apply to be an Orientation Assistant? What do you hope to accomplish in your new position? I applied to be an Orientation Assistant, not only because I love this program, but because I want to help it grow. I hope to accomplish helping this organization reach more students on campus, and help implement new work that can set as a placeholder for others to use to further the good SOAR does.
Why should students get involved on campus? Students should get involved on campus because it is such a great way to branch out and gain real world experiences. People on campus know that you’re a student first, which gives you the perfect balance of being able to try new things and build your skill set without overworking yourself. As well, this is the best way to get out there and meet new people and get new connections!
What is your favorite Missouri State tradition? Why? My favorite Missouri State tradition is taking a photo with the bear statue! It’s a great way to look back every year and see how far you’ve grown.
What advice do you have for our family members? Enjoy getting to watch your students start this new chapter of their life. Know that they are coming to a school where they are welcomed and cared for!
What advice do you have for our students? Don’t be afraid to try new things in college. There isn’t a better time than now to do this, and you never know who you’re going to meet along the way. Enjoy it!
