Why Staying at Missouri State for Graduate School Just Makes Sense – Caden Minnis

April 30, 2025 by Priscilla Childress

If you’re in your senior year at Missouri State, you’ve probably had at least one person ask, “What’s next for you?” It’s a big question, and it can feel like a lot. But if you’re thinking about grad school, you don’t have to start over somewhere new. You’ve already built something here, why not keep going?

Build on What You’ve Started

Missouri State has been your home for the last few years. You know the campus, the people, the resources—and most importantly, you’ve made connections that matter. Grad school here means you don’t have to waste time adjusting to a new environment. You can jump right into what’s next with a solid support system already in place.

I know that I was told by everyone that for graduate school, you should go somewhere else and try new things. That was definitely taken into consideration, but Missouri State was just offering too much of what I needed for graduate school to go anywhere else.

It’s Affordable—and That Matters!

Cost played a huge role for me in deciding where to go for grad school. Missouri State continues to be one of the most affordable options out there, and that includes graduate programs. There are assistantships, scholarships, and financial aid options that make continuing your education doable without taking on a mountain of debt. If you’re already here, you know what kind of value you’re getting, and it keeps on going even after undergrad!

Speaking of graduate assistantships, the process for being selected for one is very easy. Simply searching up “Graduate Assistantships” on the Missouri State website will take you to a portal of every opportunity available on campus. There is tons of information provided from the graduate college and different departments offerings GA positions that makes the process so much easier.

Real Support from People Who Know You

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Missouri State? You’ve already built relationships with professors and staff who care about your goals. They’ve seen what you’re capable of and can help guide you through the next phase. It’s not about starting from scratch, it’s about continuing to grow with the people who’ve already helped you get this far.

Personal testament to the College of Business. The professors who helped me achieve a bachelor’s degree are the same one that are getting me through grad school. Such an exceptional program and I’d recommend the MBA program to anyone.

Keep Living in a City That Works for You

Springfield has a lot going for it, especially for young professionals. If you’ve found your favorite study spots, coffee shops, or hiking trails, why give that up? Staying in Springfield for grad school gives you the chance to explore even more career opportunities while still enjoying the city you’ve gotten to know. There’s a lot here to take advantage of. It’s like what everyone says: Springfield is a big city with a small-town feel.

Shoutout to the Alamo Drafthouse. Springfield houses the largest one in the nation and offers $7 movie tickets on Tuesdays. My girlfriend and I refuse to go to any other movie theater because of the great service, amazing food (get the chips and queso!), and great selection of old and current movies.

Staying at Missouri State = A Smart Next Step

You’ve put in the work, made the connections, and found your place here. Continuing to grad school at Missouri State isn’t just convenient but also a smart way to take what you’ve built and level it up. Continue that momentum that you build in your undergrad and propel yourself to new heights with grad school.

If grad school is on your radar, don’t overlook the obvious choice. Missouri State has everything you need to take that next step. So if you’re still wondering what’s next, maybe it’s right here.
