Tips for a Smooth Transition to College  – a Note from Abby Dunker

June 15, 2025 by Priscilla Childress

Starting college is an exciting milestone, but the transition can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re moving into the residence hall, commuting, or balancing academics and social life, these tips are here to help you through your journey with confidence!

  1. Get Organized Early
  • Use a planner or digital calendar to track events, deadlines, and assignments.
  • Print or screenshot your class schedule and find where your classes are located before the first day.
  • Download our school’s learning platform (BrightSpace).
  1. Build a Routine
  • Set a consistent sleep schedule to stay well-rested for classes.
  • Create a study routine – set aside time each day to review notes or complete assignments.
  • Plan out time for yourself to keep a balanced schedule.
  1. Learn How to Manage Your Time
  • Break larger assignments into smaller, manageable tasks to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Prioritize small breaks in between large study sessions (study for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break) to stay productive.
  1. Get Involved on Campus
  • Join a student organization to meet new people.
  • Attend campus events like Welcome Weekend and Bear Bash
  • Explore volunteer and leadership opportunities to build connections.
  1. Take Advantage of Campus Resources
  • Use the Bear CLAW (tutoring & writing center) for academic support.
  • Visit Magers Health & Wellness for medical and counseling services.
  • Utilize the Career Center for resume help, internships, and job opportunities.
  1. Communicate with Professors & Advisors
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class or during office hours.
  • Stay in touch with your academic advisor to keep track of your degree progress.
  • Email professors professionally and check your MSU email regularly.
  1. Give Yourself Grace
  • Adjusting to college takes time- it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at first.
  • Don’t compare your experience to others- everyone’s journey is different.
  • Celebrate small victories, whether it’s making a new friend or getting a good grade!

Remember, college is a learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. Stay open to new opportunities, be kind to yourself, and embrace the journey ahead. You’ve got this! And as always, bear up! 🐻
