Let’s get to know the Harvey Family…James, Brooklyn, a sophomore at Missouri State and Emily. The Harvey’s are from St. Charles. MO.

What resources has Brooklyn found useful at Mo State? The Meyer Library Study Rooms, Foster Rec Center, Magers Health and Wellness and the BearLine, the campus shuttle system.

What is your family’s favorite thing to do in Springfield? Walking campus, trying new restaurants, and doing a new fun activity each time we’re in town visiting!

What is something you wish you knew when your student started college?  Our daughter has always been very independent, and we worried that after experiencing her newfound independence at college, she might not look forward to coming home. Instead, we all eagerly anticipate her breaks, and she genuinely enjoys being home with us. It has been reassuring to see that home remains a place where she feels safe & comfortable. There’s no place like home!

What are some ways that you support Brooklyn while she’s at Mo State? Staying connected through regular visits and being just a phone call away whenever she needs us. We encourage her independence by allowing her to make her own decisions while always being available to listen, offer guidance, and provide advice when she asks for it. Our goal is to support her growth while ensuring she knows she always has someone she can rely on.

What is one piece of advice you would give another family sending their first child to college? Let them figure most things out on their own. It can be difficult to step back, but trust that they are capable! They will grow into more independent and responsible adults because of those experiences, and they (and the world) will thank you for it later.

What is one Mo State Tradition that your family wants to complete on campus together?  Attending Family Weekend each year.

What is one of your families favorite activities to do together? Why? We love going on vacation to a new place each summer. When we’re all home together, we enjoy family movie nights with pizza & popcorn, and fighting over who the dog will want to lay with!
