About Guys’ Gathering Circles
Guys’ Gathering groups bring together 6-10 boys with two college-aged facilitators each week for 8 weeks for 1-2 hours. These meetings provide an action-oriented context where participants can explore the positive and not-so-positive definitions of masculinity and how these expectations impact their own diverse identities. Each Gathering group meeting follows the same format, which includes a warm up activity, a check-in with each participant, a focused activity exploring the weekly topic, and a reflection and group dialogue component. Topics explored include:
- Competition
- The male “box”
- Bullying
- Valuing diversity
- Safe expression of emotions
- Defining power from multiple perspectives
- Rejecting violence
- Becoming allies with girls and women
- Mentoring and making a difference with others
- Making safe and healthy decisions for themselves
Guys’ Gathering is…
- Honesty – The gathering circle is a space where boys can honestly examine the messages that define what it means to be a “man” and express themselves at their own pace.
- Respect – The gathering circle encourages boys’ respect for themselves and for others
- Leadership – The gathering circle provides boys with positive role models who share leadership responsibilities and encourage youth to make wise decisions.
- Strength – The gathering circle strengthens boys by building protective factors and developing resiliency and self-confidence.
