Students are invited to build their communication, mediation, and negotiation skills in a 1-week, 3-credit online hour course – COM 521/621: Communication, Mediation, and Negotiation. The course, which utilizes an intensive interactive training format via Zoom, explores the processes of mediation and negotiation as methods for resolving conflict, with an emphasis on interpersonal and organizational conflict.
The 40-hour training format for the class (meeting June 7-11, 2021, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mon.—Fri. via Zoom) also meets the Missouri Supreme Court requirements for civil mediators, and meets the core mediation training requirements for many other states.
Students who enroll in the course will:
- Earn 3 credit hours at the undergraduate (COM 521) or graduate (COM 621) level.
- Complete a certified 40-hour online training.
- Learn about the processes of mediation and negotiation.
- Build skills that will be useful in the workplace, community, and interpersonal relationships.
- Reinforce what they have learned through daily experiential activities.
This unique class format, which is much more interactive than a traditional class, allows students to build practical skills that employers want.
- The ability to mitigate conflict is one of the top qualities employers are looking for.
- And communication skills are the most desired characteristic employers are seeking in new college graduates.
After completing this course, not only will students have earned 3 credit-hours, but they will walk away having completed a certified mediation training they can list on their resume.
