New faces at the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality

They will be back next year, too.

March 21, 2018 by Tori York

In the 29 years that the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) has held a conference and career fair, one thing was missing: Missouri State’s hospitality students.

Jokima Hiller, instructor, and Dr. Dan Crafts, associate professor, both of hospitality leadership, were not willing to let students miss out again. With a lot of hard work, they were able to fund five students and Crafts to attend.

With Crowdfunding efforts, two pancake breakfasts, and a Diversity Fund Grant from Missouri State, they raised a total of $4,450.

About the trip

Idalia Aguilar, Shani Adams, Makayla Reynolds, Elisa Kelley, Nick Nguyen and Crafts headed to Chicago, Illinois, to attend the conference Feb. 15-18.

Each student either holds an office or is a member of the local chapter of NSMH.

While students were there, they were able to network, get interview tips and explore Chicago.

Aguilar said because of the conference, she may run for national board.

Adams expressed she feels more comfortable navigating the industry as an international student.

Hiller echoes these thoughts, adding how wonderful it is for students to see so many diverse professionals in one place.
