Dr. Nikolay Gerasimchuk presented the keynote at the 19th World Congress of Materials Science and Engineering June 11-13 in Barcelona, Spain.
He originally wanted to do an oral presentation but was offered in addition to be the keynote speaker in the chemistry and physics of new materials section.
Gerasimchuk spoke first on non-traditional, smart materials that originated in laboratories of coordination chemists. These new, recently developed materials are useful in many applications including sensors, indicators and catalysts.
“I wanted to present this because of existing stigma around the topic of materials which are often thought to be high temperature composites, alloys and ceramics,” Gerasimchuk said.
Gerasimchuk received a certificate of recognition for his keynote presentation.
He also presented a talk on unique crystal structures of new mixed metal oxides solids.
These new solids have several interesting properties:
- Non-linear optical effect. This is when a red laser comes into the crystal and leaves green.
- Photosalient effect. This is when crystals are moving in the laser beam.
