Geography alumnus Travis Carr spoke to GGP students Sept. 14 about his work as a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) coordinator for Nixa.
Carr, a 2006 graduate, engaged with students over his work.
GIS is a sophisticated software package used to manage resources and logistics.
“Cities, counties, agencies and companies use GIS to manage their resources,” said Dr. Toby Dogwiler, GGP department head.
Carr manages Nixa’s GIS system to track infrastructure, maintenance and assets.
He has worked on many projects, including digitizing historical plat records, which are property boundaries and ownership data. He also talked about cataloging electrical infrastructure so line crews have a better idea of what is broken and what equipment is needed for repair.
Dogwiler said it is always nice to have alumni on campus. He thinks students can learn a lot from them.
“I think it is always great when we can engage our alumni with our current students,” Dogwiler said.
Thanks for coming to campus, Travis!
