What urbanization does to the environment

Engineering students learn about urban runoff during Adopt-a-Stream cleanup Oct. 1.

As a city grows, so can negative environmental impacts to that city.

This relationship between building and the environment is one reason Dr. Matthew Pierson, Mace/Turblex engineering professor at Missouri State University, encourages community involvement with the City of Springfield’s Adopt-a-Stream program.

During the cleanup at Jordan Creek Oct. 1, participants learned firsthand about urban runoff and the effects of urbanization.

Students and faculty from the cooperative engineering program between Missouri State University and University of Missouri Science and Technology complete an average of three cleanups per year.
