Jane A. Meyer Carillon Series continues in 2010

April 30, 2010 by

The Jane A. Meyer Carillon series will feature performances by renowned carillonists on the third Sunday of each month from April through September. The public is invited to bring chairs and blankets to the fountain area outside Meyer Library to listen to these performances, each of which begins at 6:00 PM. In the event of inclement weather, seating will also be available in the lobby of Meyer Library.Dr. Roger Stoner, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, describes the Carillon series as a “special group of concert performances” and notes that it features local, national, and international carillonists. “The events are casual and audience members are encouraged to bring their friends, lawn chairs and picnic and enjoy the good music and natural beauty of the campus,” Stoner says.

After each performance, attendees have the opportunity to meet the artist and to ascend the tower for a tour of the carillon cabin. Jeremy Chesman, University carillonist, will coordinate these tours.

The 2010 lineup is as follows:

April 18: Jonathan Casady, undergraduate in Organ Studies

May 16: Dennis Curry, Kirk on the Hills Carillon, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

June 20: Sue Bergren, Millennium Carillon, Naperville, Illinois

July 18: Jeremy Chesman, University carillonist

August 15: Malgosia Fiebig, Amersfoort, Netherlands

September 19: George Gregory, Central Christian Church, San Antonio, Texas

The Jane A. Meyer Carillon was dedicated in 2002 and serves as an icon of Missouri State University. It is named after Jane Meyer, former organ student in the music department who shared a lifelong love of the arts with her husband, Ken Meyer; their generous donations made the Carillon a reality. It consists of 48 bells and is the larger of two carillons in Missouri. The Carillon plays the standard Westminster chime sequence every 15 minutes, with the first of the hourly bells marking the exact start of each hour. In addition to the Jane A. Meyer Carillon Series, the Department of Music also coordinates and presents special concerts during the academic year.

You may also visit the Carillon Series web site or download a PDF of the Carillon Series program (AdobeĀ® Reader required); this contains detailed information on each performer and the pieces they will play.
