The weekly film this week is the Oscar nominated film The Help. The film was nominated for Best Picture along with a nomination for Actress in a Leading Role for Viola Davis and an Oscar win for Actress in a Supporting Role for Octavia Spencer. The film is based on the novel of the same name and follows the story of:
“The Help stars Emma Stone as Skeeter, Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny-three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed-even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. — (C) DreamWorks” – Rotten Tomatoes
The movie has received plenty of good reviews (hence the Oscar nomination) and is tracking at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes among all critics as well as 90% of 60,179 audience members “liking it”. The consensus for the film is:
“Though arguably guilty of glossing over its racial themes, The Help rises on the strength of its cast — particularly Viola Davis, whose performance is powerful enough to carry the film on its own.”
Catch The Help in the PSU Theater on Wednesday (Feb. 29) and Sunday (Mar. 4) at 9 PM.
