Top 4 Reasons You Should Apply to Present a Poster at the Spring Scholarship Summit

February 4, 2025 by Hailey Maples

The Spring Scholarship Summit is an event that celebrates the current projects and initiatives of faculty in the realm of teaching and learning. This year is the inaugural event of the Spring Scholarship Summit, and the FCTL is accepting poster proposals for faculty to present their work in these fields. We welcome you to attend the summit to spectate and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of those being presented—but why not present a poster yourself as well? Here’s the top four reasons you should.

1) It’s Easy!

While some poster proposals may demand a hefty amount of precise and formal writing, the proposal process for this event is as painless and relaxed as can be. It’s often difficult to find the energy to participate in a restrictively formal academic process on top of all the normal responsibilities and tasks asked of faculty, but this event and the proposal process for it do not demand anything nearly this inflexible. For your poster proposal, all we need to consider you for a presentation spot is a few sentences explaining who you are and what you would like to share with faculty. So, if the extra workload is something that you are concerned about taking on—don’t be! Draft up a quick paragraph about yourself and your area of interest and send it in for us to review.

2) You Get to Share

You’ve spent your time at MSU engaging in important, innovative, and impactful work. That work deserves to be seen! Applying to present a poster at the Spring Scholarship Summit gives you the opportunity to share your hard-won discoveries, research, or other scholarly pursuits with peers. Presenting a poster gives you the chance to share unpublished work, and allows you to share continuous projects as well. If you need some inspiration or ideas on things to share, here are some good examples:

  • Research & Publications
  • Faculty Learning Communities
  • Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) Projects
  • Fellowship Initiatives

You poster proposal should focus on your work in teaching and learning. As educators, faculty are always innovating and progressing our understanding of teaching practices and learning strategies- everyone has something to share. Now is the time to share your advancements in this realm, as well!

3) You’ll Build Your Network

Presenting a poster at the Spring Scholarship Summit puts you in connection with other faculty members that may not have been familiar with you or your expertise. It also will allow you to find other faculty members that share your academic interests, and fosters expanding your network through building connections with these and other diverse faculty members. Presenting a poster at the summit expands your reach and helps contribute to your professional development by facilitating new connections that may lead you to even further academic pursuits.

4) You Get Practice Presenting Your Work

Most educators don’t exactly harbor a fear of public speaking, but getting to present your personal work verbally is rare enough that we tend to get out of practice. If it’s been a while since you’ve gotten to present your work in person to peers, look no farther! Presenting a poster at the Spring Scholarship Summit will allow you to get back in the groove of presenting your work amongst supportive MSU faculty and give you some valuable practice. This is helpful even for faculty who regularly present their projects— more practice never hurt!

The Spring Scholarship Summit is on April 11, 2025, from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. If you’re interested in presenting a poster at the event, follow the button link below to apply! If you don’t want to present a poster but would like to join us in celebrating the projects being presented, sign-up to be a spectator at the event here.

The deadline to apply to present a poster at this event has been extended to March 14, 2025.
