Primary bud mortality assessment of grapevines at station

February 25, 2021 by Marilyn Odneal

We assessed the amount of primary bud kill resulting from the low temperature on February 16. Mortality was not severe and there were no major temperature fluctuations during the critical period. Grapevines were healthy going into winter with adequate wood weights during pruning. Samples were collected from the unpruned Foundation Vineyard and the unpruned Seyval Blanc in the Research Vineyard.

Cultivar / Vineyard # Buds sampled # Killed primaries % Primary bud mortality
Cayuga White / Foundation    96   1   1%
Chambourcin / Foundation    87 16 18%
Chardonel / Foundation    96 28 29%
Norton / Foundation    97   3   3%
Seyval Blanc / Research  100   5   5%
Taminette / Foundation    98 21 21%
Vidal Blanc / Foundation    96 33 34%
Vignoles / Foundation    97   5   5%
