Men’s Health Month: Prevention, Screening & Financial Protection

June 23, 2026 by Deidre Mings

June is Men’s Health Month—a focused reminder to prioritize preventive care, routine screening, and early detection.

🩺 Prostate Health Awareness

  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (American Cancer Society)
  • Screening is most beneficial for men ages 55–69 (American Urological Association)
  • A PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test may help detect concerns early

👉 Early detection often leads to more treatment options and better outcomes.

🧭 Where to Start: Screening & Care

🏥 Urology Services

Mercy Clinic Urology provides evaluation, screening, and treatment support:

🧪 Lab Testing

  • PSA and other routine lab work can be completed at Magers Health and Wellness
  • Convenient option for preventive screening and follow-up testing

💙 Wellness & Screening Support Through Your Benefits

Missouri State University benefit plans are designed to encourage preventive care and support wellness screenings.

🧾 Important Coverage Note

Employees covered under the University medical plan receive 100% coverage for eligible preventive and wellness services when completed at Magers or an in-network provider.

These same preventive screenings (such as PSA testing and routine labs) may also be used to support reimbursement under supplemental benefits, when applicable under plan provisions.

🏥 Hospital Indemnity Plan

  • 💰 $50 Be Well Screening Benefit for completing eligible wellness screenings
  • 📄 File a claim

🧬 Critical Illness Plan

  • 💰 $100 annual wellness benefit for eligible preventive screenings
  • 📄 File a claim

🛡️ If a Diagnosis Occurs: Financial Protection

If a covered serious illness is diagnosed or a hospitalization occurs, these plans provide additional financial support beyond major medical insurance.

🧬 Critical Illness (CI) Plan

Provides a lump-sum cash benefit upon diagnosis of a covered condition, such as cancer. This benefit may be used for:

  • Medical deductibles, copays, and prescriptions
  • Travel and lodging for treatment
  • Household and daily living expenses
  • Income support during recovery

🏥 Hospital Indemnity (HI) Plan

Provides cash benefits when there is a covered hospital admission or qualifying outpatient services, depending on plan provisions. Benefits can help offset:

  • Hospital stays and outpatient procedures
  • Deductibles and coinsurance
  • Transportation and non-medical expenses during treatment

Both plans are only available for enrollment during Open Enrollment (held annually Nov 1- Dec 1), making it important to review options each year.

👉 Shared Leave Pool and Income Protection resources– additional support information.

📌 Summary

Preventive screening supports early detection, while University benefits and supplemental plans provide both wellness incentives and financial protection across prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
