Title: Undergraduate Student Writer
Pay: $9.50 per hour
Missouri State University’s office of editorial and design services is part of Missouri State’s marketing and communications division. We create the Missouri State alumni magazine, student recruitment pieces, fundraising pieces, advertisements, postcards and a variety of other marketing pieces. We support MSU’s goals of engaging alumni, encouraging private support, recruiting students and telling the great stories of the university.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Researching, developing and writing content for the alumni magazine, admissions recruitment brochures, recruitment pieces for various academic colleges and departments, development publications and other print and digital uses.
• Interviewing alumni, donors, faculty, students and other Missouri State personalities for print and digital publications; collecting audio on a digital recorder.
• Writing profiles and feature stories.
• Writing marketing and recruitment brochures and other text using approved university style guidelines.
• Collaborating with university clients to gather information, including core messaging and target audience.
• Communicating about text with clients, graphic designers, writers and editors.
Qualifications:
You must be studying for a bachelor’s degree, preferably in public relations, marketing, communication, journalism, advertising, creative writing, technical writing or English.
• You must be available to work 10 to 20 hours per week during our office’s regular business hours (M-F, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.).
• You must love being a Missouri State Bear and want to tell others about the university, its points of pride and the public affairs mission.
Skills needed
• Strong command of the English language and the ability to write clear, concise and grammatically correct copy.
• Ability to transition between writing long-form narrative to short, scannable bits of information.
• Knowledge of conducting research as it applies to writing promotional materials, such as advertisements, brochures and digital communications.
• Genuine interest in people and their stories; ability to talk to different types of people.
• Background in interviewing, writing and editing.
• Time-management skills; ability to handle several tasks at once while paying attention to detail.
• Knowledge of Associated Press writing style is not necessary but is helpful.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
• Knowledge of using email.
• Ability to work in front of a computer for long periods of time.
• Great work ethic and attitude.
• Professional appearance.
