Many students studying physics, astronomy and materials science (PAMS) also have a minor in mathematics.
Dr. Robert Mayanovic, department head and distinguished professor of PAMS, explains why adding a math minor benefits PAMS students.
Math is a key player
In physics, it’s hard to do anything without math.
“Modeling of physical processes, an important aspect of physics, is made possible using mathematics,” Mayanovic said.
No matter what discipline of PAMS a student may pursue, math will always come in handy.
“Having proficiency in mathematics is important in just about every facet of physics, astrophysics and materials science, but especially for students who want to pursue specialized training in theoretical or computational areas of these disciplines,” Mayanovic said. “One example is in quantum computing, which is modeled using quantum mechanics.”
If you are a student in PAMS and are interested in adding a math minor, contact your advisor or reach out to the math department with any questions.
