If you haven’t figured out by now, I love food. Last year, I found that one of the things that I enjoyed the most was the wider variety of fresh fruit that is available in Asia.
I decided to look to see what might be available in Bali. Honestly, I’ve never heard of most of them.
I found a list of the “Top 10 Tropical Fruits to Try in Bali:”
1. Durian – This is a big fruit covered in spikes that is NOTORUIOUS for its smell.
2. Mangosteen – this is fruit that must be cracked to get to the meat. It is also a local traditional medicine for skin and digestive issues.
3. Snake/Snakeskin Fruit – This one looks a little creepy to me. Once the outside has been smoothed, you have to peel it and then scrape the three yellow lobes before eating it.
4. Rambutan – This is one that I know I’ve had, and I actually liked it. After you get into the inside of the hairy looking fruit it’s kind of an odd white flesh that’s very soft.
5. Boni – These are wild berries and come in a variety from sour to sweet. Apparently, they are often used in salads.
6. Soursop – Grown similar to papayas or bananas, this is a very sour fruit that is often blended with sugar to make a drink. It is also apparently used to treat mouth ulcers.
7. Java Plum – This is apparently similar to the Boni (#5).
8. Yellow and Orange Coconut – This is a much smaller coconut that is considered to be more flavorful than typical coconuts. I remember a lot of coconuts last year. It definitely helped a couple of times when I felt really dehydrated!
9. Ambarella – This one is apparently crunchy and pretty sour.
10. Pomelo – This is a citrus fruit that can be either sweet or bitter. Apparently it’s considered to be a local cure for hangovers!
To me, some of these don’t sound that great, but I’d be willing to try. I think everyone should try the “strange” fruit whenever we see it. Last year, there was stuff that I absolutely hated that others people loved. Who knows what you might really like.

Wooow they look so good! I love mangosteen. I haven’t tried numbers 5-10 so it’ll be interesting to see what they taste like. What was that fruit you had you didn’t like?
