We spent the entire day in Hanoi today and it was definitely one of the more interesting days. We did a lot of sightseeing. We went to the presidential palace, which was a pretty yellow color and it was gigantic. The atmosphere of the area was amazing as well. Then we went to the first university in Vietnam. When i first heard of i was not very interested, but it turned out to be a very interesting and beatiful sight. At this point it was extremely hot and humid, but it was still enjoyable. The university contained many buddhist relics (not sure if thats the right word) and they were all so well made and cool looking. We then went to the POW prison where John McCain was held, the Hanoi Hilton they called it. This was as sad as it was fascinating. After seeing the conditions many of the prisoners endured, i couldnt help but think about the long term mental toll that kind of torture can give a person. We had a nice lunch, then a chance to shower and rest for a few minutes. Afterwards, our tour guide Andy took most of us to a shop where they handmake their own art with paint and eggshells. We all bought some really good stuff. After that we went to the old quarter of Hanoi. I was in awe in this area. It really felt like all of Hanoi’s culture condensed into a small area. I got the opportunity to try balut (duck fetus) and egg coffee. The balut wasnt great but better than i expected. The egg coffee was delicious. We are now finishing up with dinner. While today was absolutely exhausting, it was well worth it.
