Student Spotlight: Alex Wolf

October 10, 2017 by

This week’s Student Spotlight features Missouri State University senior, Alex Wolf. Students featured in the Student Spotlights show characteristics exemplified in each of Missouri State University’s three pillars: Ethical Leadership, Cultural Competence, and Community Engagement. They also exemplify what daily practices of sustainability look like. You can find these students educating, volunteering, and pushing for a more sustainable future. Please read on to see how Alex practices the three pillars, sustainability, and what it means to be a bear.

Name: Alex Wolf

Hometown: Foristell, MO

Graduation Year: 2018

Major: Wildlife Conservation and Management

What is your favorite vegetable?

Green Beans

What career options are you thinking about and why?

I want to work with endangered species, specifically habit rehabilitation and reintroduction. I want future generations to be able to enjoy wildlife naturally, not in a cage.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Spending time outdoors, such as hiking or hammocking.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

I’d have to say Australia to learn about all the different species of animals. I’d love to see a kangaroo in the wild.

When did you first become interested in sustainability? Share the story.

I first became interested in high school when I worked for a golf course. A coworker saved beer and soda cans from the customers to recycle for money. I thought it was really cool, even if it was only for money.

How are you involved in sustainability on campus and/or in the community?

I pick up trash around town and on campus when I see it. I encourage my friends and family to do the same.

What motivated you to get involved?

Seeing the damage that’s been done to our planet. I couldn’t stand watching our beautiful home be destroyed.

What advice would you give other students who want to live more sustainably?

Start small. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Start by collecting your recyclables or using reusable bags at the grocery store. The smallest change can make a difference.

What is one thing that makes you unique?

I’m going to school for something I’m passionate about, not just something that’s going to make me a lot of money.

What is your favorite quote?

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you”

-Frank Lloyd Wright

Anything else you want to share with the world?

Please be mindful of your choices. We only have one planet (Mars isn’t a viable option…yet).

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
There are three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic.
