MSU Waste Diversion Efforts

October 27, 2022 by Doug Neidigh

Help MSU Reduce Landfill Waste!

MSU currently diverts 26% of waste from the landfill.  However, 78% of the waste currently going to the landfill from MSU, can be recycled or composted.  We need your help to increase collection of recyclable and compostable materials.  If you can divert an additional 0.25 pounds per week by recycling, reusing items, or segregating compostable items in designated bins, we can reduce over 100 tons of waste from the landfill!

0.25 lbs =  11 plastic bottles, 7.5 aluminum cans, or 24 pages of paper

Besides ongoing collection of compostable materials in dining halls, the PSU is now collecting pre-consumer and post-consumer compostable materials.  New bins have recently been installed in the PSU to help improve the collection of recyclable and compostable materials.  Check out these new bins!  Follow the new labeling to properly segregate materials.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
There are three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic.
