Tip Tuesday: How to Start a Student Organization

March 6, 2018 by

Do you want to make campus or the Springfield community a better, more inclusive place but don’t know how to put that want into action? Do you want to find like-minded individuals to learn from while making it easier for others to do the same? This blog is meant to help you figure out how you can start a student-led organization and get the ball rolling on making lifelong connections!

Missouri State University has over 350 student organizations registered with the Office of Student Engagement. These organizations are grouped into eight categories according to their main purpose. Academic/Professional, Greek social, honorary, religious, service, social, sports, and university.

The Perks

Did you know involved students are actually more likely to graduate and feel more connected to the university, campus, and the people? Not only that, but those students are also more familiar with university resources. They overall report higher levels of satisfaction with their college experience!

The Process

Step 1

Contact the Graduate Assistant (GA) for Co-Curricular Involvement in the Office of Student Engagement, Chris Groh: Groh333@live.missouristate.edu to set up a meeting in which the registration process and questions can be discussed.

Step 2

Create and submit a Constitution and/or Bylaws document. Email completed documents to GA, Chris Groh (email listed in step one)

Step 3

Find an Advisor and appoint a President. Each organization must have a minimum of 4 MSU students as members. Together you will develop a purpose for your organization.

Step 4

Once your documents have been approved by OSE, register your organization on CampsLINK and upload your approved Constitution and/or Bylaws.

Step 5

Complete necessary paperwork: Annual Update Form, Substitute W-9, Mailbox Agreement Form, Faculty/Staff Agreement Form. Turn in completed paperwork to Regan Baker.

And that’s it! Congrats on your new organization!

You can find more information in the Student Organization Handbook!

Have any questions? Head over to the Office of Student Engagement webpage to learn more! You can email them at StudentEngagement@missouristate.edu or by calling them at 417-836-4386. You can also find their office in Plaster Student Union room 101!

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
There are three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. Pictured is the nested approach to sustainability. In this model, we assume that our economy is dependent on society to exist and function, and both the economy and society are dependent on a healthy environment in order to exist. Something is truly sustainable when it is environmentally, socially, AND economically sustainable.
