5 Ways to be More Sustainable Abroad

March 27, 2018 by

As summer grows closer, some of us may be growing a little impatient. Whether you be traveling across town or to a completely different country, it’s always smart to think a little more sustainably. Here are five easy ways you can be more sustainable abroad.

Make it a road trip, if possible

Sure, this may take a bit more time, but imagine how many memories you’ll make! You could also save money (especially if you’re a heavy packer like me).

Use public transit, bike, or walk when possible

Why waste time dealing with a car when everything could be either in walking distance or just a quick bus ride away? You can also use Uber, or another transportation app.

Stay in hostels or eco-friendly Airbnbs

Sure, you may have to share a bathroom with other guests, but again, you may make great memories and save a lot of money in the long run!

Keep a sustainable diet by eating local

Whether you’re taking a vacation or studying abroad, it’s good to completely dive into the culture you’re surrounded by. Try new foods at some local restaurants, or learn to cook something new you’ve never tried before. You may find something you like.

Leave nothing but footprints

Especially when exploring nature, make sure you aren’t throwing away any waste in nature. When hiking, make sure you stick to the marked trail so you don’t disturb natural habitats; those markers are there for a reason.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
There are three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic.
