“To work to better my community is a gift to me,” Ehlers said. “I encourage others to jump in, even though their schedule may be busy. It is so rewarding to make a difference for those around you.”
About her service work
Ehlers incorporates the public affairs mission in her teaching, university service and community leadership.
She has a passion for creative food sources and sustainability.
She works to incorporate opportunities for her students to learn and experience ethical leadership and community engagement.
She also works with several service projects aimed toward creating healthier communities.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized in this way,” Ehlers said. “One doesn’t typically become involved with community service for the recognition, but it was wonderful to have my service appreciated by my peers.”
About the award
Ehlers was nominated by Dr. Stephanie Hein, department head of hospitality leadership.
The nomination process did not stop there. Only one nomination per college was allowed, so Hein had to make a case to Dr. Tamera Jahnke, dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.
Jahnke agreed that Ehlers was the best choice, and the application process began.
Ehlers completed the application, including two letters of recommendation and a letter outlining her work with public affairs.
Congratulations, Abbe!
