The Association of Missouri Geologists (AMG) recognized two Missouri State University students.

Emma Gibson and Conor O’Dowd received awards Oct. 12 at the annual meeting of AMG.

Gibson

Gibson received the O.R. Grawe Award. It recognizes the top undergraduate geology student in Missouri.

“Emma has an outstanding academic record, is active in student organizations within our department, and has an exceptional record of research with the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute,” said Damon Bassett, senior instructor of geology and geography.

To apply for the award, Gibson had to find support from the department chair and two faculty members. She also had to write a personal statement about her interests and goals.

Gibson received an engraved Brunton pocket transit and case and a $300 cash stipend.

O’Dowd

O’Dowd received the Clayton Johnson Award. It is for the graduate student who presents the best research paper in the geology and geosciences section at the annual meeting of the Missouri Academy of Sciences.

“Conor won the award on the basis of many factors: his presentation’s scientific merit, his speaking ability, his timing, the quality of his abstract and his ability to clearly and concisely respond to questions,” Bassett said.

O’Dowd received an engraved geologic hammer and a cash stipend of $600.

Other notables

Several students also presented at AMG. Mary Humpreys won the American Institute of Professional Geologists Best Undergraduate Poster.

More than ten alumni attended the event.
