Missouri State alumni Randall Moore (’02, media production) and Brandon Kerr (’03, electronic arts) will be on campus Feb. 6 to screen Moore’s documentary “Evidence of Harm,” exposing the dangers of mercury dental fillings. The screening will be held at 7 p.m. in the Plaster Student Union Theater with a talk-back session to follow.

Film highlights dangers of routine dental procedures

“Evidence of Harm” chronicles the lives of three ordinary people who became reluctant health advocates after suffering from the devastating effects of hazardous mercury vapors during routine dental procedures.

According to the film, 120 million Americans currently have amalgam, or “silver,” dental fillings that contain mercury, a potentially toxic heavy metal. Composite resin fillings are often used as an alternative to amalgam fillings.

More about the alums

Moore wanted to document the hazards of dental amalgam fillings after finding that mercury, a known neurotoxin, is causally connected to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. His father had recently been diagnosed with the devastating illness, and Moore set out to show that these dental fillings produce the largest source of mercury in the general population, putting patients, staff and the global environment at risk.

Kerr was a producer on “Evidence of Harm” and its visual effects coordinator. He owns the video production company Syndicate Studios in Kansas City, Missouri.

Moore and Kerr have been working together since they were students at Missouri State, where they developed the short film “Pandora’s Box” with Chris Nagle, now employed with MSU’s photographic services department. “Pandora’s Box” won the Best of Festival/King Foundation Award at the 2004 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.
