African American Heritage Month
February
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

LOGOS: Call for Submissions
LOGOS: A Journal of Undergraduate Research will accept submissions from all fields until 11:59 pm on February 15. To be eligible for publication, a submission must have been made for an undergraduate course at Missouri State University or an affiliated campus.
LOGOS is dedicated to publishing outstanding work by undergraduates in every
academic discipline, including original research, essays, creative writing, and artwork. Led by Missouri State’s Faculty Advisory Board and Honors College student editors, LOGOS conforms to the highest standards of scholastic integrity in a blind peer-review process.

Haven
Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

The art of Victoria Goro-Rapoport will be on display at Brick City Gallery Monday January 25-Saturday February 20, 2016.
Brick City Gallery is located at 215 West Mill Street, Springfield. Gallery hours are M-F 11am-6pm, and Saturdays Noon-5pm
Exhibit will be open during Springfield First Friday Art Walk February 5, until 10pm.
Galleries are closed national and university holidays.
Russian born Victoria Goro-Rapoport originally trained as a set designer, working with various puppet and drama theaters before emigrating from Russia in 1990. She discovered etching while living in Israel from 1990-1994. She went on to earn her MFA in set design from the University of Utah in 1998, and her MFA in printmaking from the University of Illinois in 2002. Goro-Rapoport is currently Professor of Drawing and Printmaking at the University of Nebraska, Kearney. Her work explores the precarious connection between human-made spaces and the humans who inhabit

A month long event which promotes and engages healthy, multidimensional wellness options offered by Campus Recreation for Foster Recreation Center student, staff and faculty members. Many prizes are available throughout the program. A one-time fee of $5 is required, but that will give the participant a level one punch card, a drawstring bag, a Frisbee, and a coozie. After completing the level one punch card they can turn that in for a free level two punch card and blender bottle. After completing that, they can turn it in for a level three punch card and either chapstick or a paracord bracelet. Finally, after completing that punch card they can turn it in for a phone arm band. All completed punch cards will also be entered in a drawing to win even bigger prizes!!

Professor Emeritus, Dr. Juanita Simmons from University of Missouri speaks to true diversity and reminds us of why we cannot be complacent in addressing racism throughout education in a plenary session located in Glass Hall 102 on Feb. 9th at 2pm.
Juanita Cleaver Simmons is one of seventeen public school administrators selected to participate in the nationally renowned Cooperative Superintendency Program of the University of Texas at Austin. She completed this program with a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, with emphasis in urban superintendency and educational policy and analysis. Her secondary emphasis is social work and community affairs. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Midwestern University. She majored in English and Speech, and minored in Special Education. She attended the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Dallas receiving advanced graduate studies in Humanities, and North Texas University for Educational Administration. She earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin. Juanita has served over 25 years in public school instruction and leadership, including the Dallas Independent School District, the Texas Education Agency, and the Austin Independent School District. Her curriculum writing experiences include presentations for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civitas project in Ireland, and cultural exchange projects with several countries in West Africa. She serves as a grants reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education, Washington, DC.

CNAS Public Lecture Series – Geotourism in action!

In the past twenty years, a movement has emerged that recognizes the impact of tourism on a community, both positively and negatively. We have seen the successes of resort and theme park development, but we have also experienced the loss of culture, tradition, habitat, natural attractions and an increasingly large human imprint on the environment. We recognize the importance of tourism assets to a community and have addressed their importance in the Geotourism movement, both from the geographic and geologic perspective. While we have defined a need to protect our tourism assets, we have not clearly defined the roles of individuals who need to have the skills to implement that protection. We have not trained the individuals who will protect the very assets we have identified. This presentation has three goals. First, we will describe the new Missouri State University Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography -Geotourism and explain its components. Second, we will define what we believe is a viable, workable Geotourism initiative. Third, we will look at the development of the Home Grown Highway project for Webster and Wright Counties, which incorporates the Geotourism concept.

Creating Organic: The Role and Impact of U.S. States in Developing Organic Standards

From 1976-2-10, 38 states adopted legislation regulating the organic food and agricultural market. The project evaluates the causes for the initial emergence and diffusion of organic regulatory policy in the U.S. and the consequences for current and future policy debates for labeling food at the national level. Three case studies (California, Vermont, and Georgia) are presented in addition to quantitative results.

Contain, Crush & Incorporate: A Historical View of Policing the African American Community

• The African American Studies Committee Lecture
• “Contain, Crush & Incorporate: A Historical View of Policing the African American Community” argues that in response to the 1960s urban rebellions the U.S. government developed a strategy to contain the African American population, crush militant resistance to racial oppression and incorporate moderate Blacks into the power structure. The strategy was successful in stemming the 1960s Black Power revolt.
• This talk explores the ways in which the strategy of containment undergirds much of the current conflict between police and African Americans. It contends police brutalization of African Americans is largely a consequence of enforcing polices of hyper surveillance designed to limit Blacks’ mobility.

Missouri State Basketball Recycling
Every year Missouri State participates in RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste and increase recycling. In celebration of RecycleMania, we will be raising awareness and increasing recycling at the Men’s Home Basketball games in February.
Volunteers will stand at the recycling stations before and after the game and during half time to help patrons determine what is recyclable. All volunteers should meet inside the main entrance to JQH arena 15 minutes early to get their location assignment and instructions. As a bonus, volunteers will be able to watch the game from the student section between their shifts.

WellFit 2016 starts February 1st and ends March 1st.
1. Register: visit the FRC front desk for a mini brochure and punch card explaining the program. After activating your $5 card receive a FREE FRC bag with a coozie and Frisbee.
2. Participate: participate in Campus Recreation’s program areas of fitness, wellness, aquatics, intramurals, & outdoor adventures to collect punches. The more punches, the more cards, the more cards, the more prizes!
3. Win!: Turn in your completed punch card (10 punches with at least 1 punch in 3 different program areas) and be entered to win! You can win massages, and unlimited bearfit pass, bookstore gift cards, and more!
