African American Heritage Month

February
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

PLAY – Uncle Vanya

7:30 – 10:00 PM February 18, Craig Hall Balcony Theatre
Originally published in 1897, Chekhov’s classic existential comedy is resonating with contemporary audiences, thanks to this fresh new translation in everyday English. Vanya and his niece Sonya have devoted their lives to managing the family’s country estate. A large share of the proceeds has gone to support the urban lifestyle of Sonya’s father, Professor Serebryakov, whose late wife was Vanya’s sister. Now retired, the self-absorbed professor has returned to the estate with his beautiful, much younger second wife, Yelena. Their arrival disrupts the work of the farm and unleashes a torrent of long sublimated emotions. Both Vanya and his friend Astrov, the village doctor, fall under the spell of the sensuous Yelena, while Sonya confesses her unreciprocated love for Astrov, and all must face their regrets and unfulfilled dreams. Uncle Vanya plumbs the depths of the human psyche with insight, wit and compassion.
Written by Anton Chekhov
Translated by Paul Schmidt
Directed by Melanie Dreyer-Lude

Jazz at the Q

8:00 pm – 10:00pm, February 19, 308 W. Commerical St. Springfield MO
Chris Burnett, a prominent alto saxophonist, jazz musician and composer, who began his active career at 18 years old as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, is performing live starting at 8pm located at the Q Enoteca (308 W Commercial St, Springfield, MO 65803)
Chris Burnett is an alto saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator who began his active career at the age of 18 years old when he was selected by audition and accepted for musical service as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, where he performed and toured with several noteworthy professional US military band organizations for audiences at numerous locations in the continental United States and overseas. Subsequently, Mr. Burnett has continued as a life-long learner while performing music professionally for over three decades.
Born in Olathe, Kansas, he was ultimately raised in Paola after his family had traveled extensively in early childhood and lived at such places as: France, Michigan and Colorado. His studies in instrumental music began seriously under clarinetist, James R. Fuchs. Mr. Fuchs was the local school band director who exposed him to professional saxophone players like Charles Molina and Gary Foster during those formative years. He has studied with numerous significant teachers and at the Armed Forces School of Music, Webster University, Columbia College, Berklee College of Music, and American University.
Mr. Burnett is a former director of the Jazz Ensemble Program at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla); a former director of the NATO Jazz Ensemble; and, a former featured performing member of the Faculty Jazz Ensemble of the Armed Forces School of Music that was under the direction of Maurice Williams, Jr. (former leader of the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble).
As a composer, Mr. Burnett is the 1995 5-Star Award of Merit Winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs for his original composition and arrangement for big band, titled “Daedalus”. “Daedalus” was initially recorded by the award-winning Engineer Center Jazz Ensemble and published on the highly acclaimed compact disc recording by the 399th US Army Band, titled “Essayons” – which was also the first-ever CD recording released in that particular military band’s history. Today, Chris Burnett has established a credible reputation as one of the finest alto saxophonists of his generation and is considered among Kansas City’s most respected jazz artists. He has two commercial CD recordings available on the Artists Recording Collective label.

Community Involvement Fair

The Community Involvement Fair is co-sponsored by Community Involvement & Service,  Citizenship and Service-Learning, Public Affairs Support and the Career Center. This event invites community agencies to come on campus and exchange information with Missouri State students, faculty, and staff. The goal of the Community Involvement Fair is to foster a relationship between the Missouri State Community and local organizations.

  • Faculty & Staff – Are you looking to engage your students in meaningful service and learning opportunities or internships?  Promote this event to your students and attend yourself!
  • Student Organizations – Take advantage of this opportunity early in the semester to make some great community contacts for volunteer and internship opportunities.  These community agencies love working with student groups on initiatives that serve our community.
  • Student Volunteers – Are you looking to enrich your college experience through community service or an internship?  Are you passionate about a particular social issue?  Come by the Community Involvement Fair and learn about organizations making a difference in our city, state, nation, and the world!
This year, our Fall Community Involvement Fair will be on Wednesday, February 24th in the Plaster Student Union.  The event will run from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Check-in for agencies will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Missouri State Basketball Recycling

Every year Missouri State participates in RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste and increase recycling. In celebration of RecycleMania, we will be raising awareness and increasing recycling at the Men’s Home Basketball games in February.

Volunteers will stand at the recycling stations before and after the game and during half time to help patrons determine what is recyclable. All volunteers should meet inside the main entrance to JQH arena 15 minutes early to get their location assignment and instructions. As a bonus, volunteers will be able to watch the game from the student section between their shifts.

Please see the sign-up genius for dates and times available.

CNAS Public Lecture Series – Geotourism in action!

7:30 – 8:30 PM, February 9, Temple Hall Room 002
In the past twenty years, a movement has emerged that recognizes the impact of tourism on a community, both positively and negatively. We have seen the successes of resort and theme park development, but we have also experienced the loss of culture, tradition, habitat, natural attractions and an increasingly large human imprint on the environment. We recognize the importance of tourism assets to a community and have addressed their importance in the Geotourism movement, both from the geographic and geologic perspective. While we have defined a need to protect our tourism assets, we have not clearly defined the roles of individuals who need to have the skills to implement that protection. We have not trained the individuals who will protect the very assets we have identified. This presentation has three goals. First, we will describe the new Missouri State University Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography -Geotourism and explain its components. Second, we will define what we believe is a viable, workable Geotourism initiative. Third, we will look at the development of the Home Grown Highway project for Webster and Wright Counties, which incorporates the Geotourism concept.

Contain, Crush & Incorporate: A Historical View of Policing the African American Community

2:00 AM – 4:00 PM February 11, Meyer Library Room 101
• The African American Studies Committee Lecture
• “Contain, Crush & Incorporate: A Historical View of Policing the African American Community” argues that in response to the 1960s urban rebellions the U.S. government developed a strategy to contain the African American population, crush militant resistance to racial oppression and incorporate moderate Blacks into the power structure. The strategy was successful in stemming the 1960s Black Power revolt.
• This talk explores the ways in which the strategy of containment undergirds much of the current conflict between police and African Americans. It contends police brutalization of African Americans is largely a consequence of enforcing polices of hyper surveillance designed to limit Blacks’ mobility.
•
• University of Illinois-Urbana
Senior Editor, TBS/The Black Scholar, 2011-2015
President of the National Council for Black Studies, 2010-2014
• Sponsors: African and African American Studies Committee, College of Humanities & Public Affairs, College of Arts and Letters, Anthropology & Sociology Department, Political Science Dept, Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning
• Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua teaches in the departments of African American Studies and History at the University of Illinois. He does research on Black community formation, racial violence and African American social movements. He is the author of America’s First Black Town: Brooklyn, Illinois, 1830-1915, Sankofa, and co-editor of Race Struggles. Cha-Jua writes RealTalk: A Black Perspective, a bi-weekly column for the News-Gazette. He trains police recruits in multicultural competence at the University of Illinois Police Training Institute.

Dallas Children’s Theater THE BFG (Big Friendly Giant)

January 22, Meyer Library 205 Technology Training Center
In an enchanting dramatization of Roald Dahl’s award-winning story, a 15-foot-tall giant teams up with an orphan girl named Sophie to save the children of England from child-eating ogres – with some help from the Queen of England, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force!
Humongous on humor and large on laughs, the story of The BFG was Roald Dahl’s personal favorite. On stage, the Dallas Children’s Theatre brings this whizzcracklingly wacky tale to life with puppets and people creating a fantastical world of towering giants and magical adventures.
This performance is part of Hammons Hall’s David B. McQueary Family Theatre series, and is recommended for ages 7 and up.

Chanukah

December 6-15
This holiday, often misunderstood as the “Jewish Christmas” since it occurs in December, commemorates the victory of the Jewish people, led by the Maccabee family, over the Syrian Greeks in 165 B.C.E. This victory marked the end of a three-year period of religious persecution, restored Jewish independence, and ensured the survival of monotheism (belief in one God). According to legend, whe the Jews returned to cleanse their Temple, which had been defiled by pagan worship, they discovered only enough consecrated oil to keep the holy lamp burning for one day. However, the oil miraculously lasted eight days, the time needed to secure a new supply.
Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting a candle on each of the eight days of celebration. On the first night, one candle is lit in a branched candlestick called a menorah, and an additional candle is lit each night until the eighth night. This ceremony has given the holiday the additional name of “Festival of Lights.” Hanukkah is joyfully celebrated. Special Hebrew hymns, including “Rock of Ages,” are sung, family members exchange gifts, and children play with a dreidel, a four-sided top inscribed with the Hebrew letters for “a great miracle happened there.” Potato pancakes, or latkes, are a traditional food treat, with the oil used for cooking recalling the oil used in the sacred lamp.
A four-sided top for spinning, called a dreidel, is popular for playing various Hanukkah games. Potato pancakes, called latkes, are a very popular food that can be found in many supermarkets or delicatessens.
Jewish holiday observances begin at sunset of the first date listed.

Bodhi Day

December 8
This day marks the time when Prince Siddhartha Gautama, a spiritual teacher and founder of Buddhism, positioned himself under the Pipul tree and vowed to remain there until he attained supreme enlightenment. Buddhist traditions vary as to what Siddhartha’s experience was while meditating under the tree, but all agree that upon the rising of the morning star, he had experienced enlightenment and attained Nirvana; a state of being free from suffering and broken from the cycle of rebirth. Among truth of existence, freeing himself from all human suffering, and finding perfect happiness. The date is based on the Japanese Buddhist calendar.

International Day of Disabled Persons

December 3
The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 was established by the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981). The Day aims to promote a better understanding of disability issues with a focus on the rights of persons with disabilities and gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. The goal of full and effective participation of persons with disabilities in society and development was established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982.

A major focus of the Day is practical action to mainstream disability in all aspects of development, as well as to further the participation of persons with disabilities in social life and development on the basis of equality. Highlight progress and obstacles in implementing disability-sensitive policies, as well as promote public awareness of barriers to the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the lives of their societies.

Native American History Month

November
In response to an effort by many to gain a day of recognition for the great influence American Indians have had upon the U.S., Congress designated a week of October to celebrate Native American Awareness Week in 1976. Yearly legislation was enacted to continue the tradition until August 1990, when President Bush approved the designation of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Each year a similar proclamation is issued. President Clinton noted in 1996, “Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America’s first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence.” November is an appropriate month for the celebration because it is traditionally a time when many American Indians hold fall harvest and world-renewal ceremonies, powwows, dances, and various feasts. The holiday recognizes hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages, and celebrates the history, tradition, and values of American Indians. National American Indian Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the positive effect native peoples have had on the cultural development and growth of the U.S., as well as the struggles and challenges they have faced.

Panamanian Independence Day

November 1-28
The Fiestas Patrias (literally ‘Homeland Festivals’) mark the process by which Panama achieved independence from Spain in 1821, then Colombia in 1903, and (more empirically) from the United States with the handover of the Panama Canal in 1999. The celebration extends over the entire month of November, with various days singled out for their respective honors.
Nov 2 – Day of the Faithful Dead – On this day, processions honor those who fought for Panama’s independence in the many battles that preceded the nation’s full separation from Colombia.

Nov 3 – Separation Day – Inaugural festivities are marked with parades, speeches and celebrations across the nation.

Nov 4 – Flag Day – Tributes are paid to Panama’s red, white and blue flag, which was designed and stitched in secret by Manuel Amador Guerrero and his mother-in-law, Maria Ossa de Amador, so that it would be ready once separation from Colombia was announced.

Nov 5 – Marks the city of Colon’s separation from Colombia, just two days after the country’s capital Panama City made its move.

Nov 10 – Cry of Los Santos – This day marks the public uprising of the town of Los Santos in the province of Los Santos against the Spanish in 1821, triggering similar popular uprisings in town across the country and decisively initiating the move toward full independence from Spain.

Nov 28 – Independence Day – With nationwide separation from Spain finally recognized in 1821, Panama achieves full independence on this day, which is commemorated with the most lavish celebrations of the month, including full-dress military marches, streets packed with dancing and revelry, music, cavalcades and traditional costumes.

HOPE Connection

HOPE Connection is a one day, one-stop service site for the Ozark’s homeless population to gain access to vital services. Most importantly, the event is outcome oriented, it is not just a day for people to wait in line for information on resources available in the community, but a day for people to make changes, and have immediate access to essential services.  Hope Connection expects to serve more than 850 homeless and poverty stricken individuals this year, connecting them with services from 55+ agencies including healthcare, education, employment, haircuts, and more.

Help us in our effort to end homelessness by volunteering your time at HOPE Connection. With expanded veterans services, we anticipate more homeless guests than ever.  Please join us in serving the homeless and in reaching our goal of 500 volunteers.
