Last day to Drop or Withdraw (student will receive an automatic W grade), declare Pass/Not-Pass, and Change to or from Audit for Fall 2015 Second Block classes.
Pass/Not Pass and Audit changes must be processed through the Office of the Registrar, Carrington Hall-Room 320. Drops and withdrawals can be processed online at My Missouri State, until midnight of the deadline day. If you have a hold on your account preventing the use of the web registration system to drop a class, contact the Office of the Registrar prior to midnight on the deadline day. Office hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. After 5:00 pm, email Registrar@missouristate.edu from your University email account, or fax 417-836-6334.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and acts to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1998 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender graphic designer, columnist and activist to memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. Since its inception, Transgender Day of Remembrance has been held annually on November 20th, and has slowly evolved from the web-based project started by Smith into an international day of action. In 2010, Transgender Day of Remembrance was observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 countries. Typically, a Transgender Day of Remembrance includes a reading of the names of those who lost their lives during the previous year and may include other actions, such as candlelight vigils, art shows, food drives, film screenings, marches, among others.

The cost for the seasonal flu vaccine is as follows:

* Retirees – on MSU insurance – No Cost (paid by MSU health insurance plan)
* Retirees on Medicare – No Cost (paid by Medicare) – Check in at the Business Office prior to receiving injection
* Students – No Cost (paid by Student Fees)
* Others – $29.50
* Please note, Taylor Health and Wellness Center does not vaccinate children under 6 years of age. Ages 6-9 years need to bring a copy of their immunization record to determine if the child needs one or two flu vaccines. If you have children less than 6 years of age, please contact their pediatrician for information about the vaccine.
* If you are on Coumadin (warfarin) we must have an INR lab result in the last 3 weeks equal to or less than 3.5.

Native American History Month

Novmeber
In response to an effort by many to gain a day of recognition for the great influence American Indians have had upon the U.S., Congress designated a week of October to celebrate Native American Awareness Week in 1976. Yearly legislation was enacted to continue the tradition until August 1990, when President Bush approved the designation of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Each year a similar proclamation is issued. President Clinton noted in 1996, “Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America’s first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence.” November is an appropriate month for the celebration because it is traditionally a time when many American Indians hold fall harvest and world-renewal ceremonies, powwows, dances, and various feasts. The holiday recognizes hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages, and celebrates the history, tradition, and values of American Indians. National American Indian Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the positive effect native peoples have had on the cultural development and growth of the U.S., as well as the struggles and challenges they have faced.

Panamanian Independence Day

November 1
The Fiestas Patrias (literally ‘Homeland Festivals’) mark the process by which Panama achieved independence from Spain in 1821, then Colombia in 1903, and (more empirically) from the United States with the handover of the Panama Canal in 1999. The celebration extends over the entire month of November, with various days singled out for their respective honors.
Nov 2 – Day of the Faithful Dead – On this day, processions honor those who fought for Panama’s independence in the many battles that preceded the nation’s full separation from Colombia.

Nov 3 – Separation Day – Inaugural festivities are marked with parades, speeches and celebrations across the nation.

Nov 4 – Flag Day – Tributes are paid to Panama’s red, white and blue flag, which was designed and stitched in secret by Manuel Amador Guerrero and his mother-in-law, Maria Ossa de Amador, so that it would be ready once separation from Colombia was announced.

Nov 5 – Marks the city of Colon’s separation from Colombia, just two days after the country’s capital Panama City made its move.

Nov 10 – Cry of Los Santos – This day marks the public uprising of the town of Los Santos in the province of Los Santos against the Spanish in 1821, triggering similar popular uprisings in town across the country and decisively initiating the move toward full independence from Spain.

Nov 28 – Independence Day – With nationwide separation from Spain finally recognized in 1821, Panama achieves full independence on this day, which is commemorated with the most lavish celebrations of the month, including full-dress military marches, streets packed with dancing and revelry, music, cavalcades and traditional costumes.

Haven

Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

Exhibit: Respecting and Preserving Art and Artifacts

October 19 – Decempber 18, Meyer Libary 306

This exhibit features the research of students in the Fall 2014 course ART/MST 488: Basic Conservation of Art and Artifacts. Students in this integrated Citizenship and Service-Learning class researched the objects as part of their course projects. Objects are on loan from the Ralph Foster Museum, Drury University, Christian County Historical Society, the Guy Mace collection, and other private collections. Students also worked on-site at the Union Campground Cemetery in Springfield.
First offered in 2011 by Dr. Billie Follensbee, ART/MST 488 is an innovative, experiential, hands-on course that combines the advanced historical study and research of art and artifacts with an introduction to conservation techniques.
This exhibit is in Special Collections and Archives in Room 306 of Duane G. Meyer Library.
Special Collections and Archives is pleased to support Dr. Follensbee and her students by providing study space and conservation facilities, as well as developing the current exhibit showcasing the students’ work.
Special Collections hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours are until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays when classes are in session.

Carrie’s Café is the popular, student-managed restaurant of the hospitality and restaurant administration department. Students enrolled in HRA 435 (Restaurant Management) design Carrie’s menu, prepare and serve the food and market the restaurant.
Carrie’s Café is open to the public during certain times throughout the semester. Please refer to this website for hours and days of operation.
We are now located on the fourth floor of Pummill Hall. Metered parking available in Lot 22, 24 and 38 (Bear Park South). If parking in metered parking at Bear Park South, the Bear Line Shuttle designated Red Route stops at Carrington which is right next to Pummill.

PLAY: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

In one of his most whimsical and lighthearted comedies, Shakespeare celebrates the confusing, chaotic, magical, irrational, irresistible nature of romantic love! In a moonlit forest on the eve of a royal wedding, several sets of characters converge: a group of young lovers, a troupe of amateur actors and a band of fairies. Through their cleverly interconnected plotlines — including a play within the play — A Midsummer Night’s Dream encompasses forbidden love, unrequited love, a lover’s quarrel, enchanted love, tragic love (though comically portrayed) and, finally, true love that restores balance and harmony.

Planning Through the Lens of Equity and Engagement

Mr. Shaw emphasizes inclusive planning and will talk about planning communities for minority populations, addressing poverty, and managing rapid growth.

Eric Shaw, Director of the Washington, DC Office of Planning will discuss his role in planning the Nation’s Capital and his previous experience as Community & Economic Development Director for Salt Lake City, Utah, the Director of Community Planning for the Louisiana Recovery Authority post Katrina, and his work in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors in Miami, FL and Silicon Valley.
Shaw earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in International Development and Policy Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

“Early Rock ‘n’ Roll and Pentecostalism with Dr. Randall J. Stephens

“‘There were these other singers…and they cut up all over the place.’ Early Rock ‘n’ Roll and Pentecostalism,” a free public lecture with Dr. Randall J. Stephens.
What role did Pentecostalism play in rock ‘n’ roll history? Historian and American Studies scholar Dr. Stephens will explore the relationship between religion and American popular music.
A Reader in American Studies at Northumbria University-Newcastle, Dr. Randall Stephens writes and teaches about the American South, religion in the US, and popular music. He is editor of the history magazine,Historically Speaking, and associate editor of the journal, Fides et Historia. Stephens is the author of The Fire Spreads: Holiness and Pentecostalism in the American South (Harvard University Press, 2008) and The Anointed: Evangelical Truth in a Secular Age, co-authored with Karl Giberson (Belknap Press of Harvard University Press). His current book project is The Devil’s Music: Christianity and Rock since the 1950s (under contract with Harvard University Press).

Missouri State University has a new student organization!
MSU: I’m First is a student group devoted to helping Missouri State’s first generation college students build community and get the information they need to succeed in college.
On November 19th, the first organizational meeting of this new group will be held in the Plaster Student Union, room 312 B & C, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Over 15 faculty and staff members have already volunteered to serve as mentors to the students in MSU: I’m First.
If you are a first generation college student, or someone interested in mentoring this group, please come join us on the 19th to learn more about how MSU: I’m First can help you succeed at MSU.

SAC Cultural Affairs and Lectures presents: Zonnie Gorman – Navajo Code Talkers

Gorman will present a lecture on the history of the Navajo Code Talker program that includes its inception in 1942, the development and testing of the original code by the first twenty-nine Code Talkers, and its subsequent usage in the Pacific. She will also highlight honors received since its declassification in 1968. Students will learn not only about the vital role the Code Talkers played in World War II, but about the pre-war social and economic conditions of the Navajo Nation, as well as something about the world view and philosophy of the Navajo people.

HOPE Connection

HOPE Connection is a one day, one-stop service site for the Ozark’s homeless population to gain access to vital services. Most importantly, the event is outcome oriented, it is not just a day for people to wait in line for information on resources available in the community, but a day for people to make changes, and have immediate access to essential services.  Hope Connection expects to serve more than 850 homeless and poverty stricken individuals this year, connecting them with services from 55+ agencies including healthcare, education, employment, haircuts, and more.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business.

This begins the first day of Muharram of the new year 1432 based on the Islamic lunar calendar. The Islamic lunar calendar dates from the Hijrah, the emigration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in A.D. 622. Years in the Islamic lunar calendar are called Hijrah years and are designated as anno Hegirae (Latin for “in the year of the Hijrah”), abbreviated “A.H.” Since Islamic holidays are based on the lunar calendar, a holiday may occur twice in the same Gregorian year.

Islamic holiday observances begin at sunset of the first date listed and end at sunset of the last.

On November 9-10, 1938, after a series of attacks, thousands of Jewish homes, shops, schools and synagogues were ransacked and destroyed, leaving the streets covered in pieces of smashed windows – the origin of the name Kristallnacht or “Night of Broken Glass.”

Native American History Month

Novmeber
In response to an effort by many to gain a day of recognition for the great influence American Indians have had upon the U.S., Congress designated a week of October to celebrate Native American Awareness Week in 1976. Yearly legislation was enacted to continue the tradition until August 1990, when President Bush approved the designation of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Each year a similar proclamation is issued. President Clinton noted in 1996, “Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America’s first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence.” November is an appropriate month for the celebration because it is traditionally a time when many American Indians hold fall harvest and world-renewal ceremonies, powwows, dances, and various feasts. The holiday recognizes hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages, and celebrates the history, tradition, and values of American Indians. National American Indian Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the positive effect native peoples have had on the cultural development and growth of the U.S., as well as the struggles and challenges they have faced.

Diwali

November 11
Culture/Religion: Hindu
This is one of the most important festival of the year for Hindus. It lasts for five days and combines a number of festivals to celebrate different gods and goddesses and events in their lives as described in Hindu tradition. The day before Diwali is spent cleaning the house, shopping and decorating with flowers. A design is painted in white in front of the door of the house to bring good luck. Lamps are lit for the entire five days beside roads and streams, along edges of roofs, and on window sills to enable Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity, to find her way to every home.
Since Diwali is a “festival of lights,” candles are an appropriate gift. In addition, sweets, dried fruits, cakes or cookies called diyas made in the shape of the oil lamps used to decorate the walkways of one’s house might be given. Keep in mind that Hindus neither eat meat nor drink alcoholic beverages. Appropriate greetings for all Hindu holidays include “God bless you with prosperity and happiness” or “I wish you happiness and prosperity.”

Panamanian Independence Day

November 1
The Fiestas Patrias (literally ‘Homeland Festivals’) mark the process by which Panama achieved independence from Spain in 1821, then Colombia in 1903, and (more empirically) from the United States with the handover of the Panama Canal in 1999. The celebration extends over the entire month of November, with various days singled out for their respective honors.
Nov 2 – Day of the Faithful Dead – On this day, processions honor those who fought for Panama’s independence in the many battles that preceded the nation’s full separation from Colombia.

Nov 3 – Separation Day – Inaugural festivities are marked with parades, speeches and celebrations across the nation.

Nov 4 – Flag Day – Tributes are paid to Panama’s red, white and blue flag, which was designed and stitched in secret by Manuel Amador Guerrero and his mother-in-law, Maria Ossa de Amador, so that it would be ready once separation from Colombia was announced.

Nov 5 – Marks the city of Colon’s separation from Colombia, just two days after the country’s capital Panama City made its move.

Nov 10 – Cry of Los Santos – This day marks the public uprising of the town of Los Santos in the province of Los Santos against the Spanish in 1821, triggering similar popular uprisings in town across the country and decisively initiating the move toward full independence from Spain.

Nov 28 – Independence Day – With nationwide separation from Spain finally recognized in 1821, Panama achieves full independence on this day, which is commemorated with the most lavish celebrations of the month, including full-dress military marches, streets packed with dancing and revelry, music, cavalcades and traditional costumes.

Birth of Baha’u’llah

November 12
This day celebrates the birth of the Baha’i founder and teacher, Baha’u’llah. Born to an affluent family in Persia in 1817, Baha’u’llah spent many of his later years as a prisoner and in exile for his work in the Babi movement. It was in his prison cell that he had his new religious revelation and the Baha’i faith was born. On this day, one of nine holy days in the Baha’i religion, Baha’is do not work. Many observe the day in small celebrations or gatherings where prayers are said from Baha’u’llah’s writings.

Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

Study Away Art Exhibition

October 19, Meyer Library Second Floor

The Study Away Art Exhibition in Meyer Library includes student art made while in Study Away programs during the Summer of 2015. Students studied with MSU faculty in Florence, Italy and in multiple locations in New Mexico, including the Acoma Pueblo Reservation. Professor Gwen Walstrand and Professor Jerry Hatch traveled with thirteen MSU students to Florence, Italy where they resided for five weeks in order to study photography and drawing in this Renaissance town. The resulting photographs, drawings and presentations have been exhibited in Florence at the Santa Reparata International School of Art and will be on display in the Meyer Library from October 9th through November 6th.
Professor Steve Willis traveled with 8 students to study the Art of the Native American Southwest. While living on the Acoma Reservation students worked with local artists to learn about making traditional Acoma pottery. After living at Acoma, the students then traveled to Arizona to hike Canyon de Chelly to visit the historically important White House Ruins. While in New Mexico students hiked El Moro, Bandolier and Ghost Ranch to make en plein air images. Students will exhibit journal pages, photographs, drawings and paintings.

Exhibit: Respecting and Preserving Art and Artifacts

October 19 – Decempber 18, Meyer Libary 306

This exhibit features the research of students in the Fall 2014 course ART/MST 488: Basic Conservation of Art and Artifacts. Students in this integrated Citizenship and Service-Learning class researched the objects as part of their course projects. Objects are on loan from the Ralph Foster Museum, Drury University, Christian County Historical Society, the Guy Mace collection, and other private collections. Students also worked on-site at the Union Campground Cemetery in Springfield.
First offered in 2011 by Dr. Billie Follensbee, ART/MST 488 is an innovative, experiential, hands-on course that combines the advanced historical study and research of art and artifacts with an introduction to conservation techniques.
This exhibit is in Special Collections and Archives in Room 306 of Duane G. Meyer Library.
Special Collections and Archives is pleased to support Dr. Follensbee and her students by providing study space and conservation facilities, as well as developing the current exhibit showcasing the students’ work.
Special Collections hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours are until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays when classes are in session.

Politics and the Death Penalty 1930-2012

Recent historians have argued that capital punishment practices have always been shaped by political considerations across history; however, empirical examinations of this relationship have primarily been restricted to last third of the 20th century. In order to expand the temporal scope used to examine death penalty practices, this study examines whether three political perspectives are able to account for the imposition of death sentences and the execution of offenders at the state level from 1930 to 2012.

Just Eat It- Documentary Screening for Food Waste Prevention Month

In honor of Food Waste Prevention Month at Missouri State University, we will be screening Just Eat It, a 74-minute documentary film about food waste and food rescue by Peg Leg Films in partnership with British Columbia’s Knowledge Network. This event is sponsored by the Missouri State University Department of Political Science in collaboration with Missouri State University Sustainability.

Film Synopsis: We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash?

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.

Featuring interviews with TED lecturer, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.

“Killing the Saints to Save Jesus: Religious Entrepreneurs and Rescuing Authentic Tradition,” a free public lecture with Dr. Gerardo Marti, will be at Missouri State University on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. in Glass Hall 102.
Come hear a comprehensive sociological assessment of the Emerging Church Movement. Dr. Gerardo’s lecture will explore the ways religious entrepreneurs are transforming Christianity in order to save it.
Dr. Gerardo Marti is the L. Richardson King Associate Professor and Sociology Department Chair at Davidson College, as well as the editor of the journal, Sociology of Religion, and a project director for the Latino Protestant Congregations Project. An ethnographer whose research centers on race/ethnicity and innovation/social change in congregational life, he is the author of A Mosaic of Believers (Indiana University Press, 2005), Hollywood Faith (Rutgers University Press, 2008), Worship across the Racial Divide (Oxford University Press, 2012), and The Deconstructed Church (Oxford University Press, 2014).

Is Anybody Listening? is a documentary film focused on American Veterans.
In honor of Veteran’s Day MSU will present the film, Is Anybody Listening?This documentary lets American Veterans speak openly about their war experiences. Instead of ignoring the isolation many veterans experience when they return home, the film focuses on the power of love and connection and the importance of listening wholeheartedly and respectfully to what our veterans have to say.

Trained as a clinical and research psychologist, Paula Caplan is also an award-winning playwright, actor, director and filmmaker. “TAPS Project”

The Missouri State University Pride Band will present its annual, “Taps Project” on Wednesday, November 11 in conjunction with this year’s Veterans Week.
This colorful presentation will feature 60 trumpets assigned to areas throughout the campus performing TAPS in a “cascading effect”. Each trumpeter takes his cue three notes after the one preceding him.
Prior to moving to their assigned areas, all of the trumpets will assemble on the steps of McDonald Arena to perform our National Anthem at 10:45am.
The public is invited to attend any portion of the morning’s presentation. Chairs will be provided and shuttles will be able to unload behind Carrington Hall.

Eric Shaw, Director of the Washington, DC Office of Planning will discuss his role in planning the Nation’s Capital and his previous experience as Community & Economic Development Director for Salt Lake City, Utah, the Director of Community Planning for the Louisiana Recovery Authority post Katrina, and his work in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors in Miami, FL and Silicon Valley.
Shaw earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in International Development and Policy Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

HOPE Connection

HOPE Connection is a one day, one-stop service site for the Ozark’s homeless population to gain access to vital services. Most importantly, the event is outcome oriented, it is not just a day for people to wait in line for information on resources available in the community, but a day for people to make changes, and have immediate access to essential services.  Hope Connection expects to serve more than 850 homeless and poverty stricken individuals this year, connecting them with services from 55+ agencies including healthcare, education, employment, haircuts, and more.

This begins the first day of Muharram of the new year 1432 based on the Islamic lunar calendar. The Islamic lunar calendar dates from the Hijrah, the emigration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in A.D. 622. Years in the Islamic lunar calendar are called Hijrah years and are designated as anno Hegirae (Latin for “in the year of the Hijrah”), abbreviated “A.H.” Since Islamic holidays are based on the lunar calendar, a holiday may occur twice in the same Gregorian year.

Islamic holiday observances begin at sunset of the first date listed and end at sunset of the last.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

October 31
Beginning on the evening of October 31 and celebrated through November 2 by the Mexicans and Mexican Americans, this holiday has its roots in two traditions: the Christian observance of All Saints and All Souls Day, and two Aztec festivals in which the souls of the dead were welcomed back to visit those who remembered them. Central to the observance is the creation of an ofrenda, or altar, in the home with flowers, foods, and favorite possessions to honor the memory of deceased loved ones and to welcome their visiting souls. The holiday is celebrated with family and community gatherings, music, and feasting, and the festivity of its observance acknowledging death as an integral part of life.
In Mexico, candy skulls and skeletons are popular treats, along with pan de muerto, a sweet bread decorated with bones and skulls and colored sprinkles. In southern Italy, children receive baskets filled with nuts, pomegranates, and martorana, colored marzipan fruit, and are told it is a gift from their ancestors. Also popular throughout Italy are skull- and bone-shaped cookies made from ground almonds and eggs, sometimes flavored with rum or brandy called fave dei morti, or dead man’s beans, both of which are hidden as a present to the children from the departed ones. In Balkan countries, kolivo or zhito, a wheat porridge with raisins and honey, is topped with silver dragees or almonds to make a cross and the initials of the dead.

Native American Heritage Month

November 30
In response to an effort by many to gain a day of recognition for the great influence American Indians have had upon the U.S., Congress designated a week of October to celebrate Native American Awareness Week in 1976. Yearly legislation was enacted to continue the tradition until August 1990, when President Bush approved the designation of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Each year a similar proclamation is issued. President Clinton noted in 1996, “Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America’s first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence.” November is an appropriate month for the celebration because it is traditionally a time when many American Indians hold fall harvest and world-renewal ceremonies, powwows, dances, and various feasts. The holiday recognizes hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages, and celebrates the history, tradition, and values of American Indians. National American Indian Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the positive effect native peoples have had on the cultural development and growth of the U.S., as well as the struggles and challenges they have faced.

Samhain

October 31
Samhain (pronounced ‘sow’inn’) is a very important date in the Pagan calendar for it marks the Feast of the Dead. Many Pagans also celebrate it is the old Celtic New Year (although some mark this as Imbolc). It is also celebrated by non-Pagans who call this festival Halloween. Samhain has been celebrated in Britain for centuries and has its origin in Pagan Celtic traditions. It was the time of year when the veils between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be at their thinnest; when the spirits of the dead could most readily mingle with the living once again. Later, when the festival was adopted by Christians, they celebrated it as All Hallows’ Eve, followed by All Saints Day, though it still retained elements of remembering and honoring the dead.

All Soul’s Day

November 2
In the Roman Catholic church, a day for commemoration of all the faithful departed, those baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory because they have died with the guilt of lesser sins on their souls. It is celebrated on November 2. Roman Catholic doctrine holds that the prayers of the faithful on earth will help cleanse these souls in order to fit them for the vision of God in heaven.
From antiquity certain days were devoted to intercession for particular groups of the dead. The institution of a day for general intercession on November 2 is due to Odilo, abbot of Cluny (d. 1048). The date, which became practically universal before the end of the 13th century, was chosen to follow All Saints’ Day. Having celebrated the feast of all the members of the church who are believed to be in heaven, the church on earth turns, on the next day, to commemorate those souls believed to be suffering in purgatory.
Priests celebrate mass wearing vestments of varying color – black (for mourning), violet (symbolizing penance), or white (symbolizing the hope of resurrection).

Panamanian Independence Day

November 1
The Fiestas Patrias (literally ‘Homeland Festivals’) mark the process by which Panama achieved independence from Spain in 1821, then Colombia in 1903, and (more empirically) from the United States with the handover of the Panama Canal in 1999. The celebration extends over the entire month of November, with various days singled out for their respective honors.
Nov 2 – Day of the Faithful Dead – On this day, processions honor those who fought for Panama’s independence in the many battles that preceded the nation’s full separation from Colombia.

Nov 3 – Separation Day – Inaugural festivities are marked with parades, speeches and celebrations across the nation.

Nov 4 – Flag Day – Tributes are paid to Panama’s red, white and blue flag, which was designed and stitched in secret by Manuel Amador Guerrero and his mother-in-law, Maria Ossa de Amador, so that it would be ready once separation from Colombia was announced.

Nov 5 – Marks the city of Colon’s separation from Colombia, just two days after the country’s capital Panama City made its move.

Nov 10 – Cry of Los Santos – This day marks the public uprising of the town of Los Santos in the province of Los Santos against the Spanish in 1821, triggering similar popular uprisings in town across the country and decisively initiating the move toward full independence from Spain.

Nov 28 – Independence Day – With nationwide separation from Spain finally recognized in 1821, Panama achieves full independence on this day, which is commemorated with the most lavish celebrations of the month, including full-dress military marches, streets packed with dancing and revelry, music, cavalcades and traditional costumes.

Haven

Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

Study Away Art Exhibition

October 19, Meyer Library Second Floor

The Study Away Art Exhibition in Meyer Library includes student art made while in Study Away programs during the Summer of 2015. Students studied with MSU faculty in Florence, Italy and in multiple locations in New Mexico, including the Acoma Pueblo Reservation. Professor Gwen Walstrand and Professor Jerry Hatch traveled with thirteen MSU students to Florence, Italy where they resided for five weeks in order to study photography and drawing in this Renaissance town. The resulting photographs, drawings and presentations have been exhibited in Florence at the Santa Reparata International School of Art and will be on display in the Meyer Library from October 9th through November 6th.
Professor Steve Willis traveled with 8 students to study the Art of the Native American Southwest. While living on the Acoma Reservation students worked with local artists to learn about making traditional Acoma pottery. After living at Acoma, the students then traveled to Arizona to hike Canyon de Chelly to visit the historically important White House Ruins. While in New Mexico students hiked El Moro, Bandolier and Ghost Ranch to make en plein air images. Students will exhibit journal pages, photographs, drawings and paintings.

Exhibit: Respecting and Preserving Art and Artifacts

October 19 – Decempber 18, Meyer Libary 306

This exhibit features the research of students in the Fall 2014 course ART/MST 488: Basic Conservation of Art and Artifacts. Students in this integrated Citizenship and Service-Learning class researched the objects as part of their course projects. Objects are on loan from the Ralph Foster Museum, Drury University, Christian County Historical Society, the Guy Mace collection, and other private collections. Students also worked on-site at the Union Campground Cemetery in Springfield.
First offered in 2011 by Dr. Billie Follensbee, ART/MST 488 is an innovative, experiential, hands-on course that combines the advanced historical study and research of art and artifacts with an introduction to conservation techniques.
This exhibit is in Special Collections and Archives in Room 306 of Duane G. Meyer Library.
Special Collections and Archives is pleased to support Dr. Follensbee and her students by providing study space and conservation facilities, as well as developing the current exhibit showcasing the students’ work.
Special Collections hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours are until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays when classes are in session.

Humans vs. Zombies

October 26 – November 1
Humans v. Zombies is a week long event during which participants try to survive a mock zombie apocalypse while going about their daily lives on campus. The event runs each day from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. During the week, players are given objectives to complete to help them win the game. Players are marked by orange and green armbands and moderators are marked by orange vests.

provide inexpensive HEALTHY recipes and tips to help stay on track.

We will be discussing ways to eat healthier on a limited budget. Healthy tips, fall recipes, recipe cards, helpful handouts and free food samples will be provided! A full cooking demonstration by a registered dietitian and dietetic intern along with food samples will be included with the class.

Biology Seminar – Variability in Mammal Populations

Dr. Aaron Reed, an Associate Teaching Professor at University of Missouri Kansas City, earned his Ph.D. in 2004 from Kansas State University where he studied small mammal populations at Konza Prairie Biological Station. He was then a postdoc at University of Kansas where he analyzed a long-term dataset of small mammals at Nelson Environmental Study Area. He has continued the field work to survey these mammals and his seminar with examine variability in populations and relationships of important demographic parameters with the environment.

Politics and the Death Penalty 1930-2012

Recent historians have argued that capital punishment practices have always been shaped by political considerations across history; however, empirical examinations of this relationship have primarily been restricted to last third of the 20th century. In order to expand the temporal scope used to examine death penalty practices, this study examines whether three political perspectives are able to account for the imposition of death sentences and the execution of offenders at the state level from 1930 to 2012.

Just Eat It- Documentary Screening for Food Waste Prevention Month

In honor of Food Waste Prevention Month at Missouri State University, we will be screening Just Eat It, a 74-minute documentary film about food waste and food rescue by Peg Leg Films in partnership with British Columbia’s Knowledge Network. This event is sponsored by the Missouri State University Department of Political Science in collaboration with Missouri State University Sustainability.

Film Synopsis: We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash?

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.

Featuring interviews with TED lecturer, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.

“Killing the Saints to Save Jesus: Religious Entrepreneurs and Rescuing Authentic Tradition,” a free public lecture with Dr. Gerardo Marti, will be at Missouri State University on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. in Glass Hall 102.
Come hear a comprehensive sociological assessment of the Emerging Church Movement. Dr. Gerardo’s lecture will explore the ways religious entrepreneurs are transforming Christianity in order to save it.
Dr. Gerardo Marti is the L. Richardson King Associate Professor and Sociology Department Chair at Davidson College, as well as the editor of the journal, Sociology of Religion, and a project director for the Latino Protestant Congregations Project. An ethnographer whose research centers on race/ethnicity and innovation/social change in congregational life, he is the author of A Mosaic of Believers (Indiana University Press, 2005), Hollywood Faith (Rutgers University Press, 2008), Worship across the Racial Divide (Oxford University Press, 2012), and The Deconstructed Church (Oxford University Press, 2014).

Is Anybody Listening? is a documentary film focused on American Veterans.
In honor of Veteran’s Day MSU will present the film, Is Anybody Listening?This documentary lets American Veterans speak openly about their war experiences. Instead of ignoring the isolation many veterans experience when they return home, the film focuses on the power of love and connection and the importance of listening wholeheartedly and respectfully to what our veterans have to say.
Park for free in Lot 24 (access from National Ave. one block south of Grand) or Bear Park North by Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. Take shuttle bus to the Plaster Student Union (1110 E. Madison St.).
Trained as a clinical and research psychologist, Paula Caplan is also an award-winning playwright, actor, director and filmmaker. Her most recent book, When Johnny and Jane Come Marching Home: How All of Us Can Help Veterans, has won three national nonfiction awards. Caplan will hold a talkback session following the screening of her film.

HOPE Connection

HOPE Connection is a one day, one-stop service site for the Ozark’s homeless population to gain access to vital services. Most importantly, the event is outcome oriented, it is not just a day for people to wait in line for information on resources available in the community, but a day for people to make changes, and have immediate access to essential services.  Hope Connection expects to serve more than 850 homeless and poverty stricken individuals this year, connecting them with services from 55+ agencies including healthcare, education, employment, haircuts, and more.

Today is the last day to change, drop or withdraw from Fall 2014 Second Block classes, for a 50% refund.

Drops and withdrawals can be processed online at My Missouri State. If you have a hold on your account preventing the use of the web registration system to drop a class, contact the Office of the Registrar prior to midnight on the deadline day. One of the eleven holy days on the Baha’i calendar, this day marks the Birth of Bab ud-din (Mirza Ali Muhammad), who declared himself the Prophet of God. Born in 1819 in Shiraz, Iran, his mission was to reform Islam, and his teachings became the foreground for the later developed Baha’i tradition. Baha’is celebrate this day with gatherings to pray, eat together, and read about his life. Work is suspended on this day.

This begins the first day of Muharram of the new year 1432 based on the Islamic lunar calendar. The Islamic lunar calendar dates from the Hijrah, the emigration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in A.D. 622. Years in the Islamic lunar calendar are called Hijrah years and are designated as anno Hegirae (Latin for “in the year of the Hijrah”), abbreviated “A.H.” Since Islamic holidays are based on the lunar calendar, a holiday may occur twice in the same Gregorian year.

Italian American Heritage Month

Every year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent as well as Italians in America.
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci.

LGBT History Month

LGBT History Month is a month-long annual observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It is observed during October in the United States, to include National Coming Out Day on October 11. LGBT History Month originated in the United States and was first celebrated in 1994. It was founded by Missouri high school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Spectrum, MSU’s LGBT and Ally Alliance, along with the Office of Multicultural Programs provide a month-long series of events on campus to commemorate LGBT History Month. These include dances, panels, film screenings, fundraisers, discussions, art displays, and an annual talent show.

In 1988, Congress designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The Office of Disability Employment Policy has the lead in planning NDEAM activities and materials to increase the public’s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Various programs carried out throughout the month also highlight the specific employment barriers that still need to be addressed and removed. This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

October 31
Beginning on the evening of October 31 and celebrated through November 2 by the Mexicans and Mexican Americans, this holiday has its roots in two traditions: the Christian observance of All Saints and All Souls Day, and two Aztec festivals in which the souls of the dead were welcomed back to visit those who remembered them. Central to the observance is the creation of an ofrenda, or altar, in the home with flowers, foods, and favorite possessions to honor the memory of deceased loved ones and to welcome their visiting souls. The holiday is celebrated with family and community gatherings, music, and feasting, and the festivity of its observance acknowledging death as an integral part of life.
In Mexico, candy skulls and skeletons are popular treats, along with pan de muerto, a sweet bread decorated with bones and skulls and colored sprinkles. In southern Italy, children receive baskets filled with nuts, pomegranates, and martorana, colored marzipan fruit, and are told it is a gift from their ancestors. Also popular throughout Italy are skull- and bone-shaped cookies made from ground almonds and eggs, sometimes flavored with rum or brandy called fave dei morti, or dead man’s beans, both of which are hidden as a present to the children from the departed ones. In Balkan countries, kolivo or zhito, a wheat porridge with raisins and honey, is topped with silver dragees or almonds to make a cross and the initials of the dead.

Reformation Day

October 31
Reformation Day is a religious holiday celebrated on October 31 or the last weekend in October in remembrance of the Reformation. Martin Luther posted a proposal at the doors of a church in Wittenburg, Germany to debate the doctrine and practice of indulgences. This proposal is popularly known as the 95 Theses. The Reformation was the great rediscovery of the good news of salvation by grace through faith for Christ’s sake.

Samhain

October 31
Samhain (pronounced ‘sow’inn’) is a very important date in the Pagan calendar for it marks the Feast of the Dead. Many Pagans also celebrate it is the old Celtic New Year (although some mark this as Imbolc). It is also celebrated by non-Pagans who call this festival Halloween. Samhain has been celebrated in Britain for centuries and has its origin in Pagan Celtic traditions. It was the time of year when the veils between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be at their thinnest; when the spirits of the dead could most readily mingle with the living once again. Later, when the festival was adopted by Christians, they celebrated it as All Hallows’ Eve, followed by All Saints Day, though it still retained elements of remembering and honoring the dead.

All Saints Day

November 1
In the Christian church, a day commemorating all the saints of the church, both known and unknown, celebrated on November 1 in the Western churches and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Eastern churches. Its origin cannot be traced with certainty, and it has been observed on various days in different places. A feast of all martyrs was kept on May 13 in the Eastern church according to Ephraem Syrus (d.c.373), which may have determined the choice of May 13 by Pope Boniface IV when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a church in honor of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs in 609. The first evidence for the November 1 date of celebration and the broadening of the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs occurred during the reign of Pope Gregory III (731-741), who dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s , Rome, on November 1 in honor of all saints. In 800, All Saints’ Day was kept by Alcuin on November 1, and it also appeared in a 9th-century English calendar on that day. In 837 Pope Gregory IV ordered it’s general observance. In medieval England, the festival was known as All Hallows, and its even is still known as Halloween.

Panamanian Independence Day

November 1
The Fiestas Patrias (literally ‘Homeland Festivals’) mark the process by which Panama achieved independence from Spain in 1821, then Colombia in 1903, and (more empirically) from the United States with the handover of the Panama Canal in 1999. The celebration extends over the entire month of November, with various days singled out for their respective honors.
Nov 2 – Day of the Faithful Dead – On this day, processions honor those who fought for Panama’s independence in the many battles that preceded the nation’s full separation from Colombia.

Nov 3 – Separation Day – Inaugural festivities are marked with parades, speeches and celebrations across the nation.

Nov 4 – Flag Day – Tributes are paid to Panama’s red, white and blue flag, which was designed and stitched in secret by Manuel Amador Guerrero and his mother-in-law, Maria Ossa de Amador, so that it would be ready once separation from Colombia was announced.

Nov 5 – Marks the city of Colon’s separation from Colombia, just two days after the country’s capital Panama City made its move.

Nov 10 – Cry of Los Santos – This day marks the public uprising of the town of Los Santos in the province of Los Santos against the Spanish in 1821, triggering similar popular uprisings in town across the country and decisively initiating the move toward full independence from Spain.

Nov 28 – Independence Day – With nationwide separation from Spain finally recognized in 1821, Panama achieves full independence on this day, which is commemorated with the most lavish celebrations of the month, including full-dress military marches, streets packed with dancing and revelry, music, cavalcades and traditional costumes.

Study Away Art Exhibition

October 19, Meyer Library Second Floor

The Study Away Art Exhibition in Meyer Library includes student art made while in Study Away programs during the Summer of 2015. Students studied with MSU faculty in Florence, Italy and in multiple locations in New Mexico, including the Acoma Pueblo Reservation. Professor Gwen Walstrand and Professor Jerry Hatch traveled with thirteen MSU students to Florence, Italy where they resided for five weeks in order to study photography and drawing in this Renaissance town. The resulting photographs, drawings and presentations have been exhibited in Florence at the Santa Reparata International School of Art and will be on display in the Meyer Library from October 9th through November 6th.
Professor Steve Willis traveled with 8 students to study the Art of the Native American Southwest. While living on the Acoma Reservation students worked with local artists to learn about making traditional Acoma pottery. After living at Acoma, the students then traveled to Arizona to hike Canyon de Chelly to visit the historically important White House Ruins. While in New Mexico students hiked El Moro, Bandolier and Ghost Ranch to make en plein air images. Students will exhibit journal pages, photographs, drawings and paintings.

Exhibit: Respecting and Preserving Art and Artifacts

October 19 – Decempber 18, Meyer Libary 306

This exhibit features the research of students in the Fall 2014 course ART/MST 488: Basic Conservation of Art and Artifacts. Students in this integrated Citizenship and Service-Learning class researched the objects as part of their course projects. Objects are on loan from the Ralph Foster Museum, Drury University, Christian County Historical Society, the Guy Mace collection, and other private collections. Students also worked on-site at the Union Campground Cemetery in Springfield.
First offered in 2011 by Dr. Billie Follensbee, ART/MST 488 is an innovative, experiential, hands-on course that combines the advanced historical study and research of art and artifacts with an introduction to conservation techniques.
This exhibit is in Special Collections and Archives in Room 306 of Duane G. Meyer Library.
Special Collections and Archives is pleased to support Dr. Follensbee and her students by providing study space and conservation facilities, as well as developing the current exhibit showcasing the students’ work.
Special Collections hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours are until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays when classes are in session.

Humans vs. Zombies

October 26 – November 1
Humans v. Zombies is a week long event during which participants try to survive a mock zombie apocalypse while going about their daily lives on campus. The event runs each day from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. During the week, players are given objectives to complete to help them win the game. Players are marked by orange and green armbands and moderators are marked by orange vests.

Study Away Boren Award Presentation

A representative from the Boren Awards will present on Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program. Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
Maximum scholarship awards are: $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only; 8 weeks minimum); $10,000 for a semester; and $20,000 for a full academic year.

She works extensively with students and has a passion for community nutrition and health.

Biology Seminar – Variability in Mammal Populations

Dr. Aaron Reed, an Associate Teaching Professor at University of Missouri Kansas City, earned his Ph.D. in 2004 from Kansas State University where he studied small mammal populations at Konza Prairie Biological Station. He was then a postdoc at University of Kansas where he analyzed a long-term dataset of small mammals at Nelson Environmental Study Area. He has continued the field work to survey these mammals and his seminar with examine variability in populations and relationships of important demographic parameters with the environment.

The comedy competition is an annual event that allows student comedians to showcase their talent and it is a chance to improve their portfolio and experience. We will conduct auditions, and the selected students will be invited to perform stand up, comedic songs, improv or sketch. We will have a panel of judges to select the first place winner as well as the runner up. The student body in attendance will vote and select a ‘people’s choice’. The grand prize, first place winner will have the opportunity to open for the big spring comedian as well as a $50 gift card. The runner up and people’s winners will win $25 giftcards.

SAC Cultural Affairs Presents: Esera Tuaolo – Being True To Yourself

Esera’s personal story is a powerful and rare tale of coming face to face with who you really are and coming to terms with yourself and the world around you.  Several years ago, after playing for 9 seasons in the NFL (Atlanta, Green Bay and the Vikings) Esera came out on national television and told the world that he is gay.  As you might imagine, coming from the hyper macho world of professional football, this took great courage.  Now, Esera cherishes the chance to share his story in order to try and help other who may still be struggling with who they are and to other to understand the challenges people face in an intolerant society.  Tuaolo also had to overcome the cultural resistance of his Pacific Islander family and friends who had a very traditional, old world point of view.

HOPE Connection

HOPE Connection is a one day, one-stop service site for the Ozark’s homeless population to gain access to vital services. Most importantly, the event is outcome oriented, it is not just a day for people to wait in line for information on resources available in the community, but a day for people to make changes, and have immediate access to essential services.  Hope Connection expects to serve more than 850 homeless and poverty stricken individuals this year, connecting them with services from 55+ agencies including healthcare, education, employment, haircuts, and more.

One of the eleven holy days on the Baha’i calendar, this day marks the Birth of Bab ud-din (Mirza Ali Muhammad), who declared himself the Prophet of God. Born in 1819 in Shiraz, Iran, his mission was to reform Islam, and his teachings became the foreground for the later developed Baha’i tradition. Baha’is celebrate this day with gatherings to pray, eat together, and read about his life. Work is suspended on this day.

Ashura

Ashura is an Islamic holy day observed on the 10th of the Islamic month of Muharram. Shi’ite Muslims regard it as a major holiday, marking the martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson, Hussein, at the Battle of Karbala. Ashura is observed in various ways throughout the world. Processions are often held, and reenactments of the Battle of Karbala are often staged. This is a solemn day for Shi’ite Muslims, who commemorate Hussein with prayers and verse.

This begins the first day of Muharram of the new year 1432 based on the Islamic lunar calendar. The Islamic lunar calendar dates from the Hijrah, the emigration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in A.D. 622. Years in the Islamic lunar calendar are called Hijrah years and are designated as anno Hegirae (Latin for “in the year of the Hijrah”), abbreviated “A.H.” Since Islamic holidays are based on the lunar calendar, a holiday may occur twice in the same Gregorian year.

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 – October 15

Each year, American observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15-October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also Columbus Day or Dia de la Raza, which is October 12, falls withing this 30 day period.

Italian American Heritage Month

October
Every year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent as well as Italians in America.
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci.

LGBT History Month

October
LGBT History Month is a month-long annual observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It is observed during October in the United States, to include National Coming Out Day on October 11. LGBT History Month originated in the United States and was first celebrated in 1994. It was founded by Missouri high school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Spectrum, MSU’s LGBT and Ally Alliance, along with the Office of Multicultural Programs provide a month-long series of events on campus to commemorate LGBT History Month. These include dances, panels, film screenings, fundraisers, discussions, art displays, and an annual talent show.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October
In 1988, Congress designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The Office of Disability Employment Policy has the lead in planning NDEAM activities and materials to increase the public’s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Various programs carried out throughout the month also highlight the specific employment barriers that still need to be addressed and removed. This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

ZE: A Thirty Year Old Virgin’s Quest for Healthy Sexuality from A to Ze!
Missouri State University alumna Jessica Johnson’s newest solo show Ze has toured universities nationwide and has been seen at the Out North Contemporary Art Space in Alaska, Matthew Corozine Theatre in NYC, the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, Level Ground Festival in Pasadena and is in pre-production for film development. Ze is a one woman, 15 character dramedy that examines gender construction, sexuality and spirituality, and many other issues regarding the LGBTQ community. The piece centers around Tessa, a 30 year old virgin, who is in love with her transgender best friend, but is in deep turmoil over her feelings due to her religious upbringing.
• This event is sponsored by MSU’s Department of Theatre & Dance, College of Arts & Letters, and the LGBT Resource Center.
• No ticket is required. The event is free and open to the public.
• Johnson’s solo work has been seen in the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, the NYC Samuel French Playwright Festival, the Kansas City Fringe Festival, the NYC International Fringe Festival, the Sola Voce Festival, the Monodrama Thespis Festival in Germany, the Black Magic Women’s Theatre Festival in Amsterdam, and enjoyed an extended run at NYC’s prestigious Theatre Row on 42nd Street.

Study Away Art Exhibition

October 19, Meyer Library Second Floor

The Study Away Art Exhibition in Meyer Library includes student art made while in Study Away programs during the Summer of 2015. Students studied with MSU faculty in Florence, Italy and in multiple locations in New Mexico, including the Acoma Pueblo Reservation. Professor Gwen Walstrand and Professor Jerry Hatch traveled with thirteen MSU students to Florence, Italy where they resided for five weeks in order to study photography and drawing in this Renaissance town. The resulting photographs, drawings and presentations have been exhibited in Florence at the Santa Reparata International School of Art and will be on display in the Meyer Library from October 9th through November 6th.
Professor Steve Willis traveled with 8 students to study the Art of the Native American Southwest. While living on the Acoma Reservation students worked with local artists to learn about making traditional Acoma pottery. After living at Acoma, the students then traveled to Arizona to hike Canyon de Chelly to visit the historically important White House Ruins. While in New Mexico students hiked El Moro, Bandolier and Ghost Ranch to make en plein air images. Students will exhibit journal pages, photographs, drawings and paintings.

Exhibit: Respecting and Preserving Art and Artifacts

October 19 – Decempber 18, Meyer Libary 306

This exhibit features the research of students in the Fall 2014 course ART/MST 488: Basic Conservation of Art and Artifacts. Students in this integrated Citizenship and Service-Learning class researched the objects as part of their course projects. Objects are on loan from the Ralph Foster Museum, Drury University, Christian County Historical Society, the Guy Mace collection, and other private collections. Students also worked on-site at the Union Campground Cemetery in Springfield.
First offered in 2011 by Dr. Billie Follensbee, ART/MST 488 is an innovative, experiential, hands-on course that combines the advanced historical study and research of art and artifacts with an introduction to conservation techniques.
This exhibit is in Special Collections and Archives in Room 306 of Duane G. Meyer Library.
Special Collections and Archives is pleased to support Dr. Follensbee and her students by providing study space and conservation facilities, as well as developing the current exhibit showcasing the students’ work.
Special Collections hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours are until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays when classes are in session.

Magna Carta: Enduring Legacy 1215-2015

Magna Carta: the great charter of rights and liberties and the world’s most tangible and enduring symbol of the establishment of Rule of Law.
In celebration of the 800th anniversary of the document at the historic heart of English and American Constitutional Law, Magna Carta: Enduring Legacy 1215-2015, a national traveling exhibit, was curated by the Law Library of Congress and produced by the American Bar Association.
Magna Carta: Enduring Legacy 1215-2015 is brought to the State of Missouri by the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Foundation and hosted by Missouri State University at the Duane G. Meyer Library.

Guest Scholar Lynne Conner presents “Please Don’t Turn Off Your Cell Phone: The Changing Culture of 21st-century Arts Auidences

Dr. Lynne Conner will talk about the changing landscape in audience engagement in the arts. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Craig Hall lobby.
Conner asks the question: “Why don’t Americans talk about the serious arts? We talk about everything else that we enjoy, from food and wine to sports, television, games and books. Why aren’t audiences similarly engaged around theater, dance, opera, concert music and exhibition art?”
In “Please Don’t Turn Off Your Cell Phone: The Changing Culture of 21st-century Arts Audiences,” Conner will address that question by looking for clues in the active nature of the historical audience as well as in various contemporary participatory cultures (from television to popular music to social reading and citizen science). Citing material from her new book, Audience Engagement and the Role of Arts Talk in the Digital Era (Palgrave Macmillan), she will argue that audience pleasure is deeply tied up with the opportunity to interpret the meaning and value of the arts, and that this pleasure is enhanced significantly when that interpretation happens in a public, social way. Her theory of Arts Talk models a new paradigm for arts appreciation centered on audience-powered conversations (both live and digital) about the arts.
Conner is regularly invited to speak and present at international arts conferences and to consult with major arts organizations. She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre History and Performance Studies and is Professor of Theater and Dance at Colby College in Maine, where she directs plays and teaches playwriting, performance history, and art for social justice courses. Her blog, “We the Audience,” is featured on ArtsJournal.com, the most widely read arts industry on-line journal in the U.S.
Lynne Conner is a cultural historian, playwright/director and Professor in the Theater and Dance Department at Colby College. Her current research interests are focused on studying the history and contemporary status of audience behavior. Related publications include Audience Engagement and the Role of Arts Talk in the Digital Era (Palgrave Macmillan) and a widely cited chapter (“In and Out of the Dark: A Theory of Audience Engagement from Sophocles to Spoken Word”) in Engaging Art: The Next Great Transformation of America’s Cultural Life, co-edited by Steven Tepper and Bill Ivey (Routledge). She currently writes a featured blog called “We the Audience” for ArtsJournal.com, the most widely read arts industry journal with over 30,000 subscribers. Conner has given scores of talks on topics in the cultural policy field, including keynotes, lectures and workshops at (among others) the Institute of the Americas /University of Toulouse, University of Chicago Cultural Policy Center, Salzburg Global Seminar, Toronto Creative Trust, National Performing Arts Convention, Wallace Foundation, International Society of Performing Arts Presenters, Boston Foundation/Massachusetts Cultural Council, Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, Grantmakers in the Arts, Dance USA, and the American Symphony Orchestra League. Other books include Pittsburgh in Stages: Two Hundred Years of Theater and Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance: Newspaper Dance Criticism in the United States, 1850-1935. Conner’s plays and adaptations have been produced in theaters across the United States: Main Street Theatre (Houston), Theatre-Hikes (Chicago), the Actors’ Guild of Lexington (Kentucky), Quantum Theatre (Pittsburgh), Gemini Theatre (Pittsburgh), Prime Stage (Pittsburgh), Carnegie Mellon University, Smith College, William and Mary College, Loyola Marymount, Slippery Rock University, Point Park University and the University of Pittsburgh Repertory Theatre (among others). Her play about Rachel Carson, In the Garden of Live Flowers (co-written with Attilio Favorini), won the 2002 Kennedy Center David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award and an honorable mention prize in the 2002 Jane Chambers Playwriting Award contest and is published by Dramatic Publishing Company.

The Venues is a progressive church in Springfield seeking to live out the spiritual and social ambition of Jesus. Seeking truth, following Jesus, and asking questions about faith and spirituality. We provide service opportunities throughout Springfield to help meet the needs of those in our community. The Venues Downtown meets on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. at Ernie Biggs Piano Bar at 312 S. Avenue. Our south side location meets at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings at 2616 E. Battlefield Rd.

*The Venues partners with homeless resource centers Bill’s Place and Veteran’s Coming Home Center to provide weekly meals for the homeless. Positions are needed each Friday to purchase, prepare, or serve food.
