Leadership as Framing
Dr. Carrisa S. Hoelscher
Wednesday, April 26, 8:30-11:30 a.m. PSU 315
When faced with challenging situations, most people do their very best to make sense out of what’s happening—sometimes reaching for any explanation that provides comfort or seems most reasonable. In this course, we’ll examine how leaders are able to manage that sensemaking process for their team by engaging in mindful communication framing. When reality is subjective, framing can help build that reality for others. First, we’ll explore what the term framing means in the context of leadership communication. Next, we’ll assess our own communication framing tendencies and explore how we might benefit from other styles. Lastly, we’ll outline and critically examine five rules leaders should follow to implement framing effectively.
