Veterans Day: Honoring Those Who Served

Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, was first observed on November 11, 1919, to mark the end of World War I. In 1938, it became a federal holiday, and in 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, both living and deceased.

Veterans Day Events on Campus

Saturday, November 2:

  • Hosting Heroes
    • The Bears will honor military and first responders at the annual Hosting Heroes game!
    • Heroes receive a free ticket, and their guests get half-price tickets in reserved bleacher seating.
    • BearFest Tailgate
      • Sponsored by the MSU Staff Senate and and the Veteran Student Center.
      • BearFest Village opens at 11 a.m. and gates open at 1 p.m.

Friday, November 8:

  • Veterans Day Breakfast
    • Register here before Nov 1.
  • Taps Project
    • 10:55 a.m. – National anthem outside of McDonald Arena
    • 11:11 a.m. – Taps will be played by Missouri State trumpeters outside of McDonald Arena

Veteran Service Officer on Campus:

 Veteran Student Center, Meyer Library, room 108, 2nd Wednesday Each Month while classes in session

  • November 13, 2024, from 0900 – 1600
  • December 11, 2024, from 0900 – 1600

Free service provided by the Missouri Veteran Commission to all military connected students, faculty and staff.

Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) are available to provide follow-up assistance with the VA to ensure eligible veterans and their dependents receive the full range of benefits they have earned. VSOs are highly trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of veterans’ benefits, including service-connected compensation, non-service-connected disability pensions, education and training, vocational rehabilitation, burial, and survivor benefits. They also assist with health care eligibility, VA Home Loan Guaranty, and other federal and state benefits available to veterans.

No appointment necessary. Just stop in.
