Missouri State University’s Department of Art and Design invites students and the public to attend a free lecture given by visiting artist Stacey Holloway The event is scheduled from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Fox Theatre on the Square, located at 157 Park Central Square, Springfield, Missouri.
Holloway is an accomplished artist and associate professor of sculpture at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Her work is currently featured in a two-person exhibition titled “This Land” at the Carolla Arts Exhibition Center. The exhibition, which also includes work by artist Steve Snell, examines the dynamic between the natural world and its inhabitants, exploring the narratives they convey about human history and identity.
“This Land” is available for viewing Aug. 19-Sept. 13 and during the First Friday Art Walk Sept. 6.
Holloway to explain artistic processes and influences
During her talk, Holloway will discuss how she develops her ideas and the processes behind her recent works. Specifically, she will elaborate on how she integrates ethology into her creative process.
Frans de Waal’s TedTalk on moral behavior in animals inspired her interest in ethology, Holloway explained. His study of chimpanzees led him to investigate “two pillars of morality in the animal kingdom, reciprocity and empathy, as biological products rather than from religion, civilization or tradition,” she said.
According to Deidre Argyle, associate professor of sculpture at Missouri State, visiting artists’ lectures teach students about the practice of artists and their history. Students can “see the numerous paths available to them, see other ways of approaching making and learn about the broader context of the field of art and design,” she said.
