During the competition, 21 of the students advanced to the national preliminary round, according to professor of music Dr. Chris Thompson.

In addition to Thompson, other MSU faculty accompanying the students to the competition were Dr. Carol Chapman, Dr. Paula Patterson, Dr. Todd Payne, Dr. Perry Mears and artist-in-residence Mr. Brandon Russell.

Rigorous competition brings national recognition

Thompson described the competition process as rigorous and exhausting, with typically over 13,000 singers competing in the regional levels alone.

But MSU’s success rates make the process well worth the effort. [Read more…] about Voice students excel at CRNATS competition

Missouri State University’s Design and Illustration students showcased their work in the “Biennial Design + Image Exhibition,” at Brick City Gallery Oct. 20-Nov. 8.

The show has been extended to Nov. 11.

The next generation of designers and illustrators

The Design and Image Exhibition gives emerging artists and designers throughout the BFA in Design program an opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional venue.

“This exhibition is a long-standing tradition in the department,” said Vonda Yarberry, head of the Department of Art and Design. “It is curated as the ‘best works’ from all design and illustration classes from sophomore to senior level students.”

The event, curated by design faculty Maria Gerasimchuk-Djordjevic and Jacek Fraczak and artists-in-residence Balazs Faa and Ola Wiecierzewska, allows visitors to explore projects and topics of interest to current students and celebrate the next generation of designers and illustrators.

“It’s a great show, one of our biggest of the year,” Yarberry added.

Brick City Gallery is located at 215 W Mill St, Springfield, Missouri. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Call 417-836-6794 for more details.

“Talking History” brings scholarship to public radio

If you like radio talk shows and podcasts, and if you find yourself drawn to history topics despite yourself, Missouri State University has just the thing for you.

It’s called “Talking History,” and it broadcasts on KSMU on the first Thursday of every month.

Created and co-hosted by associate professor of history Dr. Djene Bajalan and MSU student Patrick Needham and produced by Jessica Balisle of KSMU, the show features conversations “with historians and scholars about the ideas, people and events that have shaped our world.”

Radio show and podcast formats

“Talking History” broadcast its first episode in April 2023. The show has evolved into two formats – a brief radio show and a longer podcast that can be accessed online at any time.

“The podcast is basically an extended version of the radio show,” Bajalan explained. “We are limited with our time on the radio (24 minutes). Therefore, we release an extended cut (‘Talking History Extra’) via KSMU where we continue our conversation.”

Bajalan and Needham just completed their October episode, featuring Ozarks history expert Dr. Brooks Blevins.

Balisle said the response to the Blevins episode has already been quite positive, describing it as “the most popular episode so far.”

Previous topics have included the Ottoman Empire, communications in ancient Rome, and China’s one-child policy.
