Facebook updates policies regarding promotions

September 9, 2013 by

Missouri State University Facebook page screenshot

Missouri State University Facebook page screenshotFacebook recently updated their Pages Terms and is now making it easier for page administrators to hold contests and promotions directly on the timeline of their Facebook page.

Through the change of Facebook’s Page Terms, page administrators may now run promotions right on their page timelines as well as in apps on Facebook. However, running promotions on personal timelines is still prohibited.

Things that page administrators can now do include:

  • Collect entries by having users post on the page or comment/like a page post
  • Collect entries by having users message the page
  • Utilize likes as a voting mechanism

Changes to photo tagging

The changes to the Pages Terms also prohibit page administrators from tagging or encouraging people to tag themselves in content that they are not actually depicted in. For example:
  • It’s OK to ask people to submit names of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize
  • It’s not OK to ask people tag themselves in pictures of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize

These updates to Facebook’s terms should make it more convenient for University units to run contests and promotions on their Facebook pages without the need for paying for a third-party app to run the promotion.

On Monday, Administrative Council approved changes to two Web-related policies.

Web policy changes

Three major changes were made to the Web policy:

Clif's TwitterPolicy extended to cover all University Web content, including official University presences on external resources.

The policy now applies to any website that is hosted through University resources or that represents the University or the professional persona of its employees.

A website is any collection of content offered through the Web, including traditional sites, blogs and social networking sites.

Credit card logosCredit card processing must use approved methods.

University websites must use an approved method for collecting online payments:

  • Direct link to a storefront
  • Approved vendor-supplied integration
  • Web Press credit card collection form
  • Custom application developed and maintained by computer services or Web and new media

Template screenshotAll official websites must use the standard header and footer.

Central, university unit, course and sponsored organization websites must include the standard University masthead and footer on all pages, unless an exemption is approved by the director of Web and new media.

Media policy changes

The Media Policy was removed from the Policy Library because the University no longer offers on-campus streaming media services. The Web Policy addresses media included within websites, including live streaming services.

On Jan. 12, I was a guest speaker for Managing Emerging Technologies, a special topics course of the MS CIS program. It brought back memories to be in my former stomping grounds. (I received my MS CIS degree in 2005.)

Social media policy issues

My presentation provided an overview and examples of four social media policy issues:

  • Training your employees
  • Intellectual property and copyright
  • Comments
  • Privacy and releases
