In our efforts to offer the latest technology, Information Services is pleased to announce that faculty and staff mailboxes will be migrated to Microsoft Office 365 Education this spring. This strategic initiative provides more flexibility to meet the University’s needs, as well as increased email storage and security for faculty and staff.
What is Office 365 Education and why is this being done?
Office 365 Education is the brand name used by Microsoft for a group of services provided to subscribing educational organizations. These services include hosted e-mail as well as Microsoft Office apps and other productivity tools, such as OneDrive for Business and Skype for Business.
Missouri State University students’ email already uses Office 365 Education, and this migration will move faculty and staff mailboxes from Missouri State servers to Microsoft Office 365 servers as well. As a result, Office 365 Education allows MSU employees to have an even more robust and secure email delivery, as well as providing increased email storage and new tools for work and collaboration.
When is this going to happen?
Faculty and staff email addresses will be migrated to Office 365 Education in groups, predominately by department/area, in a coordinated effort between Information Services and each area’s IT support staff. This is intended to reduce the impact on University business and be as least disruptive as possible. Some departments/areas will begin during Spring Break week, with the goal of having all employee and departmental mailboxes migrated by the end of the semester. You will be contacted in advance when your department or area is scheduled to be migrated. Until then, nothing will change and you will access your email and calendar as usual.
What are the benefits of moving to Office 365 Education?
- Mailbox storage is increased from 1 GB to 50 GB
- 1 TB of cloud-based file storage with OneDrive for Business
- The ability to install Microsoft Office on up to 5 personal computers per employee
- An improved web interface including Office Web Apps (Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and more)
- Access to cloud-based collaboration tools like Skype for Business and Office 365 Groups
- Enhanced privacy, security, and compliance capabilities
What will I need to do when my account is moved?
There will be a few steps to take once your email is migrated in order to log in to the Office 365 Education mailbox, including restarting your mail application. You’ll also need to re-sync your account to any mobile device applications, such as your cell phone or tablet. You’ll be informed in advance and provided step-by-step support in making this transition successful for you.
